Dell Command Update Windows Universal Application installer issues

We have switched Dell Command Update installation to the "Windows Universal Application" installer (current version: 5.4.1) some time ago. The package is getting installed via Software distribution. When checking our clients, the application is missing sometimes. Possible issues found:

  • installation fails with error code 4
  • uninstall fails with error code 1618
  • users (non-admins) are able to "just uninstall" Dell Command as it is an Appx package
  • when uninstalling and re-installing, the user facing app is missing sometimes (it appears that the behavior is influenced by whether the installer is executed in the system context or as current user with admin rights)

All in all, it is tricky the get Dell Command Update installed reliably. Also, users can just uninstall and the configured settings via ADMX will have no affect any more.

I'm wondering, is the Universal installer the way to go? We are thinking about going back to the classic installer (more reliable and users cannot uninstall). But, is it still maintained? Cannot find version 5.4.1...

Hi Schwerdti:

Just an FYI that Dell Command | Update v5.5.0 (Dell-Command-Update-Application_HW0K4_WIN64_5.5.0_A00.EXE) for the "classic" full standalone (non-UWP) edition was released on 01-Apr-2025.

Be sure to read the Important Information section of the driver details at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=hw0k4, which notes the new system requirement for Microsoft .NET 8.0.x and documents some of the known issues that can occur when updating from v5.4.0 to v5.5.0.

The official release notes and user guide at https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/product/command-update/resources/manuals were recently updated for v5.5.0 but contain little information about the known issues for this version.
