Can't download factory installed softwares.

This is my first post, so apologies if this is not the best section for this question.

I have XPS M140 system, for which I wanted to make a backup for factory installed softwares. My computer only came with XP CD.

This is not about the regular driver downloads; this is about other factory installed softwares. I checked for similar questions, but the answers were incorrectly directed towards the drivers downloads.

Ok, I will try to be more descriptive in my question. If you log into your dell account and then to "My account", there is a sections called "My Software". Under which there is an option for "Download Factory Installed Software (My Dell Downloads)". Clicking on it will lead to a page where it asks you to register your system.

When I click on "Register System" I get the error message "service tag not supported" or absolutely nothing happens.

In fact not only in this place, anywhere within Dell If I try "Find my service tag" (using service tag scanning utility) it fails. If I manually enter, my service tag seem to be recognizable, I see all details about my computer. But for downloading Factory Installed Software I have go through that automatic service tag scan first, that's where I'm stuck.

I have tried doing this in IE6 and IE8 with no success. I also have Microsoft .net 3.5 framework too . I have never changed any hardware in my 3+ yrs old laptop.

I wonder if this service is only provided to new purchases? Somewhere I read only eligible system can download those, I am not even sure if my system is eligible or not. Forget the download part, I wonder why is that service tag scan failing to recognize my system??

Thanks !!

I doubt you will be able to download software unless your computer is still under warranty, but it's a new service, so I'm not sure. Popup blockers will block the scanning for service tag. You must use Internet Explorer with popup blocker disabled to allow the scanner. It does not work with Firefox or other browsers.

Edit--I just tried it and you must allow the installation of the utility. A yellow bar on the top of the window needs to be clicked and you must Allow the installation. You might have high security setting or other blockers that don't allow the installation.

I got thru and I am not supported either, so it is only for new users. I am still under warranty.

Thank you for your reply Mary.

Before posting this, I had gone through all possible posts on this topic. I had disabled all the pop up blockers and installed whatever Active X it asks me to install. So, I have a feeling this has to do very little with me.

As you mentioned, even in warranty you couldn't go through. I am way out of warranty, so the warranty thing must not be the issue either. Service might be limited to very recent computers sold.

Unless Dell explicitly explains the reason, all we could do is guess :)

I have the same problem.

Nothing worked. After the a new installation of windows 7, i want to backup the installed software like Roxio CD Creator. But nothing happened when i tried to download it from "My installed Software".

I paid a lot of money for the laptop and so for the software but cannot reinstall this.

If there is no other possibility to download i use the home service. So the technicians must solve the problem.

the most curious thing about all this is that one isnt able to download the pre-installed dell-tools itself to reinstall e.g. after manually installing the notebook with the oem windows7 dvd and the drivers dvd . i wonder where to download those dell tools..

me as customer should not play around with hidden fileareas to download those stuff. im working in IT long time, and this time i tried to play "customer" and to see how easy it is to get those mentioned files.. it isnt.. its quite sad. hmm..

It's goes from bad to worse - they've fixed the download error, however not only do Dell nto include a Win7 CD with their products but they don't include the Back Data Local edition in your downloadable files.

Thing is they've already lost 2 sales from this - my father wanted to get a laptop the same as mine but has changed his mind since hearing about this and also my daughter was getting one for her college course... shes taken the same attitude.

Dell  - good hardware, terrible support policies.

I recently discovered I had a similar issue.  I purchased an Inspiron 1545 earlier this week and it had no reload discs with it (likely because the system was purchased off the shelf and the shop couldn't locate the original box).  I went through the steps on the Dell support site to download the factory software and could not get past the (register your system) screens.  Now not only can I not get the factory software, I'm not even sure if my system is properly registered.  If anyone discovers a solution for this, I'd like to hear it myself.
