Inspiron 15z 5523 Printing Error - spooler operation failed

I've recently started having this problem when I try to print a document from my laptop - Windows displays an error message "Error printing on " and only the first few lines of the document are printed before the printing stops and another attempt is made to print the document.  Each time an event is logged to the printservice event log with EventID=372, OpCode=Spooler Operation Failed

I've tried different applications (Word, Excel, Adobe) and get the same problem. I tested with small plain text documents.

The printer is an Epson Stylus Photo R300. My laptop and this printer had worked fine for a number of years until now. I've checked the printer and the cable on another laptop and it works ok. I've checked the operating system (Windows 10 Home) is up to date. I've checked the printer drivers are up to date. I've checked the printer spooler service is running and restarted it. I've checked the spooler queue/folder is empty.

I've run the Dell diagnostics check on the laptop and it passes.

Any ideas?
