Dell V515w fax/printer - says "Line in use" when line is NOT in use

I'm hoping someone can tell me what to do to get my Dell V515w to work.  I have tried to send a fax and it scans properly but when I try to send the fax it says "Line in use" but there is a dial tone on the phone line.  What can I do to make it send the fax. It is not connected to a computer, it is a stand alone fax connected to a phone line.

Thanks for your help!!

Tips for sending faxes

  • Load an original document faceup into the ADF or facedown on the scanner glass.
  • When using the ADF, adjust the paper guide on the ADF to the width of the original document.
  • When using the scanner glass, close the top cover to avoid dark edges on the scanned image.

Hi marypow,

Thanks for posting.

Apologies that your printer is not working as expected.

The manual shows different scenarios for plugging the printer into different types of phone line systems starting on page 57.  Troubleshooting starts on page 112.  Here are some tips to check first:

Connection checklist
• Make sure that the printer and other devices on the line (if applicable) are set up and configured correctly according to your setup scenario.
• Make sure that the cables are connected to the correct ports.
• Make sure that the cables are securely plugged in.

Check the cable connections for the following hardware, if applicable:
Power supply Answering machine Cable modem Splitter Telephone VoIP adapter DSL filter RJ-11 adapter

• If the printer is connected to a Digital Subscriber Line, then make sure you are using a DSL filter for the printer.
• If the printer is connected to a VoIP adapter or cable modem, then make sure that the printer is plugged into the
first phone port.
• If you are using a splitter, then make sure that you are using a phone splitter. Do not use a line splitter..
