Dell C1765nfw Scan File Create Error on Synology Diskstation

Hi Folks,

I had a nightmare connecting my Dell C1765nfw to my Diskstation using SMB rathen FTP.

Given the Printer doesn't support SFTP only FTP on port 21, i thought I would upgrade its scanning connection to use SMB instead.

The printer uses CIFS over SMBv1.

Initially, I got the usual Dell printer message 'Login error', then having fixed the user Login and permissions I got a path error, and finally after fixing the path I got a 'file create' error. So here's how i solved it...

The important factor was to create a Shared Folder on the Synology Diskstation with read/write permissions for the user login to key into the Dell Printer admin page.

These were the settings and they key to resolving the File Create Error was removing the Path entry altogether.

Name: [whatever name you want to show in the Printer [Computer Network] names. e.g. Diskstation Scans]

Server Type: SMB

Server Address: [IP of the Synology Diskstation no backslashes, get this wrong and you'll get an error msg, can't remember which but will depend on what you put here]

Share Name: [This is vital and is the name of the Shared Folder that you have to first setup in Synology and provide read/write permissions to for the user you will add to the Printer Login. e.g.. ScannedDocs. Make sure you check the permissions tab in Shared Folder settings in the Synology DSM]

Server Path: [You must leave blank] [if you don't leave it blank, even if the path is correct, you're likely to get the 'File Create error' and if you get the path wrong you're likely to get a Path error]

Login Name: [Make sure this is the user that has access to the root folder where the shared folder should be, you don't want the user to not have access to the root folder. I created a ScannedDocs folder as my shared folder off the root folder on the synology drive. You could of course make it a folder in one of the user's Home drives where their own Synology Drive folder is and change the path, but that's up to you.]
