Dell A940 - Suddenly no power?
My A940 quit working after a Hardware Error: 0502 message appeared on the display. It lost all power and won't turn on again. I removed printer cable and power cable, reinstalled them, but no luck. So I replaced it with another A940 we had as backup -- same problem. Tried to print but Hardware Error: 0502 on display and then no power.
I've cleaned the cartridge rails, removed and reinstalled all cords on both units. Any ideas as to what's happening? Both units were purchased new from Dell.

SOLVED! It was the power brick for A940 #1 unit as I had suspected -- and stated in a later post. For safe measure I switched out the printer cable as well. All is working fine now with A940 unit #2 using power brick #2 and printer cable #2. I am going to try using the working power brick from unit #2 in A940 unit #1 and see if unit #1 comes back to life.
It's alive! It's alive!

LonestarBabs,
Try reading...
Cleaning the encoder strip (Loud bang from printer carriage)
Remove the power brick for 60 seconds. This will reset any error messages the printer is getting.

LonestarBabs,
Removing the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds reset any error messages the printer is getting.
The error is most likely from the encoder strip. Try the power brick in each printer

I will switch out the power brick from #1 - seems strange that both printers would have encoder strip trouble at the same time. The common denominator is the power brick: #1 was in use with printer #1 when it suddenly powered off AND #1 was in use when printer #2 suddenly powered off. This leads me to troubleshoot the power brick first before I start fiddling with the encoder strips.
These printers have worked great so I don't plan to get rid of them until I exhaust all possibilities. I would turn them in to our local electronics recycler and not the landfill should I have to let them go. I agree that the cost of printer ink is horrendous!

Same problem on my a960. I had a power up failure and followed all the aforementioned solutions with no luck. I thought is was the strip contacts and tried cleaning...nothing. Then, I looked under the slot where the brick is introduced and saw that the printer contacts were bent upward into the unit. I pried them downward with a needle nose pliers.....success!
