Dell 2335dn ADF will stop on the middle of the 2nd sheet

We have multiple units of the 2335dn printer and a new issue has come up on several of the printers (of course they are out of warranty) that when you use the ADF to copy or scan multiple documents it will stop in the middle of the 2nd sheet. I have cleaned the ADF, replaced the DADF Pickup roller assembly and the DADF Rubber Pad, and it did not fix the issue. This problem is identical on all of the printers which occurred about the same time and the S/N are within the same run. Has anyone had this issue and if so, what is the fix besides replacing the whole ADF

Draco7 was exactly right, though it took me 10+ hours of screwing around to figure out what he was talking about. I reset my password on this forum just to share my answer.

Notes before beginning:

A: I had the problem every time when copying 2+ pages, but infrequently when scanning 2+ pages, because scanning is slower (I was scanning at higher quality) and gives the solenoids more time to release. When testing, I suggest you use Copy mode, not Scan mode for best results.

B: To test the DADF/Copy mode without wasting paper, empty the paper tray. You can hit the Back button to dismiss the "out of paper" error and then scan. Be sure to delete the queued copy jobs (or power off) before adding paper again.

C: Tools needed: #1 or #2 Philips screw driver. Scotch tape, Sharp razor blade to cut tape length-wise. Small needle-nose pliers or bent "J"-shaped paperclip to reattach springs. Camera to take pictures while disassembling to ease reassembly. Well-lit workspace or flashlight. Possibly a magnet in case you drop screws. Patience.

1. Raise the scanner lid (as if you were to place a document on the glass). You'll see 5 screws on the bottom side of the lid (4 of them are deeply recessed). Unscrew all 5. (Fyi all screws that we'll be taking out in this task are the same.)

2. Referring to the drawing in the service manual (link below): section 7.3/page 52. Lower the lid, then take off the 2 side covers (drawing 2) Cover-DADF-Front and (drawing 3) Cover-DADF-Rear off the top. Remove (drawing 10) MEA Unit-Cover Open, (drawing 7) ELA Hou-DADF Upper, and (drawing 11) MEA Unit-Stacker TX and set them aside.

3. Remove the 3 screws under (2) DADF-Front, and 1 screw holding the copper plate under (3) DADF-Rear.

4. Lift the (6) ELA Hou-DADF Lower and (5) ELA Hou-DADF Drv out slightly so you can get at the 3 screws holding (5) to (6). The screws are visible from the back of the DADF lid. 2 of the screws will be holding green ground wires. Unscrew those 3 screws and gently remove (6) from (5).

5. Referring to drawing: section 7.3.2/page 56. Note the two (3) Solenoid-DADF, at the lower-left and upper-right sides in (0) ELA Hou-DADF Drv. On each solenoid, you'll see a small metal plate held on by a spring. The black rubber bumper is on the solenoid under the metal plate. If you firmly press that metal plate into the solenoid (as if the solenoid were electrified) and then release, you'll notice the plate sticking for several seconds before popping back out. This is the problem. (On the unit I worked on, the left solenoid was in worse condition than the right one.) I took the metal plate off, put scotch tape on the solenoid covering the black bumper, and also on the metal plate where it touches the black bumper. You probably need to put tape on both items because both are sticky. Before you reassemble, firmly press the plate into the solenoid and release; the plate should immediately pop back out. If it does not, there's still some sticky that you need to cover. Repeat for the other solenoid.

6. Referring to drawing: section 7.3/page 52. Reattach (5) ELA Hou-DADF Drv to (6) ELA Hou-DADF Lower. You'll have to push the plate on the right solenoid in to get (5) to interlock with (6). Replace the 2 green ground wires and insert the 3 screws. Set (6) back into place.

7. Replace the 3 screws under (2) DADF-Front, and 1 screw holding the copper plate under (3) DADF-Rear.

8. Reattach (10) MEA Unit-Cover Open and (7) ELA Hou-DADF Upper.

9. You can test the DADF without completely reassembling it. Hold a few sheets loosely in the DADF and try copying (not scanning--see Note A and B above). It should work flawlessly (if your pickup rollers are good). If not, you may have missed covering some of the sticky.

10. Reattach (11) MEA Unit-Stacker TX, (2) Cover-DADF-Front and (3) Cover-DADF-Rear.

11. Replace 5 screws on bottom side of the lid.

Good job, you just saved yourself from having to purchase a new printer/copier/scanner.

Paul:

Thanks a million.  I just tore down the DADF and removed/inspected the solenoids on  P/N: JC96-05185A, DADF Drive Bracket.  The problem with the "sticky" pads is exactly as you described. I now have several printers that were destined for the recycle bin that can be put back into service.

Thank you very much. This is the first time that I have seen this issue with the sticky pads. I normally see  failed or weakened solenoids but not the sticky pad issue.

Kudos and thanks.

FINALLY!!, I figured out what the problem with
the Dell 2335dn printer and  the multiple sheet feed issue (jamming ) in
Tray#1 and the DADF, it is not the pickup wheels or the
pick clutch that is the problem, it is the rubber bumpers
that are on the gear catch relays for Tray #1 and the DADF. What is happening
is the rubber bumpers that are used to silence the clicks of the relays are
breaking down and becoming a sticky piece of rubber when the printers are
exposed to higher temperatures (80 to 90 degree) and the presence of release
spray that is used in restaurants. When the relay is activated to release the
gear for the pickup wheel, the pivot arm sticks to the rubber goo and does not
release for two or three full revolutions of the gear and this allows the pickup
of a continuous flow of two or three sheets of paper causing the jam, same with
the DADF. After removing the rubber and replacing it with duct tape (to quiet
the metal clicks), I was able to run 60 sheets through the feeder with no
problems.

Hi Draco7,

I'm having the exact same issue. I too have cleaned the ADF, replaced the pickup roller and rubber pad and yet the second page of any job is still jamming about half way through. Have you had any success in resolving the issue?

I am an experienced printer technician. I have some recovered Dell 2335dn printers in good condition and they have the same problem of stopping on the second page during ADF scanning. The problem is most likely related to a firmware issue. Dell should address this issue. There is noting the field can do to resolve this issue.

I do not see the rubber bumpers of which you speak. That is after completely tearing down the DADF of a Dell 2335dn.  Do you have a photograph ?

This is the reason that Dell discontinued the printer, I had informed the support unit for the Dell 2335dn about this issue and the solution 4 years ago, never got a reply. The printer is a great printer in the right environment the other thing is the hinges  for the top cover, if you open it too far the one hinge will break, you can fine then at a reasonable price here  www.iteminconline.com/d2335p_dell-2335-parts.html  hope this will help
