Dell 2155CDN Paper Tray Empty Error

Hi Dell Community

We have a 2 month old Dell 2155CDN colour laser (with issues) operating in an Australian Government Mac OSX environment.

The printer intermittently but continually reports Paper Tray Empty in the printer driver and does not print documents.  Restarting the printer sometimes but not always resolves the issue.  Opening and closing the paper trays sometimes but not always resolves the problem.

Contacting Dell support in Australia is an exercise in frustration and futility, having been told variously that:

- they are "too busy, please call back some other time" (yes, really)

- this would need some online diagnosis, for which we would be charged upfront

- the hold queue was at least 15 minutes

- et al

I would be interested in whether anyone has encountered this error in the past, and what steps were taken to resolve it.

I would also be interested in hearing about the general Dell support experience.  This is the first Dell we have purchased in the fleet, and I am considering simply decommissioning and writing it off if we cannot get support when required.

I had a similar problem, but in my case the documents were printing, the Dell printer just kept reporting that it was out of paper when it really wasn't, and seemed to delay printing for as long as a minute.

I found this solution online: Put a piece of paper in the multi-function tray, and then print anything to the printer from the Mac(s). You can then remove the paper (if it wasn't used for printing), and the Out of Paper message goes away. Apparently that tray reports out-of-paper to the Macs, even though for the most part- it SHOULD be out of paper. Once you put a piece of paper in it, even temporarily, it clears that error flag and the driver no longer reports it.

As I said- it's different than what you reported, but it might still work.

One other thought would be that the software your staff is printing from is defaulting to the multi-function tray, instead of the main paper tray.

As far as Dell Support goes- I've been working with them for over 8 years, and generally they have been outstanding, especially compared to some other manufacturers. I suspect though, given their current financial and corporate restructuring, that all of their departments are lacking right now. I know they completely restructured their Sales department here in the States, and I can only assume the same for their Support and worldwide operations.

I requested a Sales quote for some new equipment over an hour ago, and haven't heard back from my new Sales team yet. My old Sales rep. would have responded in minutes. It could be an isolated incident though...

I am concerned about ongoing support for their Printers, since they have publicly said they plan to exit everything but the server, networking, and storage markets. I've been buying their printers for a little over three years now because they have provided good value and quality, and at least for me have had a low failure rate.

Thanks for your post, I have been searching for a solution for a similar problem with my DFW8690 printer for a few hours and the placement of a paper in the bypass printed and cleared the problem.

I went through the menu and changed all settings to the correct paper size i was using. Default was A4 while I was using legal, so I changed all the settings, fax, scan, everything to legal and now it seems to be ok.
