Dell 1320C

I have just been given a Dell 1320C printer to clean up for a volunteer group. The problem is that the Paper Jam indicator stays on and I am unable to do a test print, I cannot find a paper jam anywhere in the printer. Can anyone help please has me stumped at the moment.

Thanks in advance for all assistance.

Wali74,

Paper Jam Issues

A paper jam is nothing more than one or both of the following two conditions:

Paper is present where it should not be
Paper is not present where it should be
A series of sensors track paper as it moves through the printer. Paper jam errors result when a sheet has been detected by a sensor at the wrong time or fails to reach a sensor in the time alloted. When a jam occurs, the printer uses a corresponding failure code or error message to show the likely problem location.

If the jam happens consistently, inspect the rollers and sensors in the area described by the printer. Sensor tests (when applicable) using the printer's various diagnostics utilities check for proper sensor operation. When a sensor fails a diagnostic test, first clean the inner surfaces of the sensor and then perform the test again. Toner or paper dust buildup can cause a sensor not to work properly.

Intermittent jams may indicate media or mechanical problems as well. Use plain paper to test functionality if the feed problem or jam occurred while using a special media (e.g., labels, card stock, etc.).

Paper Jam Causes
When paper is jammed in the printer, one of two conditions may exist:

The paper is stopped and physically damaged. This error may be caused by an obstruction in the paper path, or the paper was damaged before the printing process began. Check for obstructions in the area indicated by the jam message.
Also check for obstructions in other locations that may have damaged the paper and caused it to eventually jam. Finally, check the ream of paper for damage including folded (dog-eared) corners, tears, and unsupported hole punches or perforations. Trying a fresh ream of paper in the printer may also be useful.
Clean the inner surfaces of any involved sensor with a cloth or swab to remove any toner buildup and debris, and then perform a test of the sensor using the proper diagnostic test for that printer.
The paper is stopped but has no visible damage. The paper has been detected by a sensor at the wrong time. This could indicate a logic error with a controller card or, more simply, the wrong length paper was used for the specified print job. For example, sending a print job to the 1320c printer that requires letter-sized paper (11.5 inches long) when legal-sized paper (14 inches long) is loaded the tray causes paper jam error. Why? The printer expected the end of the page at 11.5 inches, not 14 inches.
More severe underlying problems caused the paper to jam, such as worn-out rollers or other mechanical issues within the printer engine.

Run the diags on the printer from the Tool Box.

Tool Box
Dell has released a new settings and diagnostic tool for the first time with the Dell™ 1320c Color Laser Printer. This tool is a utility simply called the Tool Box, which you can use to do the following:

View printer settings and print reports
Change printer settings that can impact printer function and print quality
Print test pages to help diagnose print quality issues
Perform diagnostic checks to verify basic machine functionality

You can also updated any drivers and firmware from the link below.

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I just noticed that I didn't include that I use a Mac running OS X Sierra. Does Tool box work on a Mac? I cannot find any software to download, I can see where the paper jam is supposed to be but there is nothing there I have manually moved the rollers and still the printer won't work.

Thanks for anything extra you can add.

Wali74,

The hardware could be defective. This printer is from 2007. If the tool box downloads with the mac os driver then, the tool box should work.
