Can't Download Scan Applications from Computer

I've used the scanner on my V715w numerous times, but today I can't. When I select my Inspiron 620 Win 7 computer to which to send the scan, it comes back with the message that it can't retrieve scan applications list from the computer.

I unplugged the printer, waited, plugged it back in. Didn't fix it. I tried printing from the computer, printed fine. What can I do to get it to read the scan applications from the computer?

Edit: Since I originally posted, I went to the Dell Printer Home app, and selected Scan to PDF, and it scanned. So everything seems to be working OK, except the printer can't find the list of scan applications. The Dell Printer Home shows 3 scan applications, Paint, PowerPoint and Adobe Reader. Question remains, what can I do to get it to read the scan applications from the computer?

shelquis,

If using a wireless printer, if you know the ip address of the printer, put this in the address bar and hit enter.

Click on Configurations

Scan to network host management

You can then click on each one or delete them all. The printer will find you the next time you log on.

shelquis,

You will need to reinstall the printer drivers and software from the link below.

Thanks Jesse. I downloaded and installed printer driver and firmware for my V715w. The downloads and installs went normally, and successfully as far as I could tell. Printer still can't retrieve the list of scan apps from the computer, but otherwise seems to operate normally. What's next?

shelquis,

Open Dell Printer Home. Is Document greyed out?

The OCR Program is needed to scan to documents, PDF's, Fax, etc. Do you have ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint installed?

Start, all programs, ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint, ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint

This is found on the printer disk.

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

OK Jesse, Rick apparently wants you to handle this one. I tried to follow the instructions in the wiki that Rick sent me, Update list of applications to send scans to , but I didn't get anywhere. Maybe you can help me. Refer to the wiki article, in Step 1, I couldn't find my Dell All-in-One Center to open. I went to the Dell Printer Home heading in the wiki and followed the instructions. In Step 3 under the Dell Printer Home heading, the applications I want are already listed. In case the list was somehow corrupt, I selected Modify and re-added Acrobat Reader. I closed and retried scanning. The printer still couldn't retrieve the list of apps that showed up in the scan destinations list. I tried step 2 of the wiki, but couldn't find the Scanning and Copying Tab they said to open. Looking down the wiki, I didn't find anything more I could do. How do I open the Dell All-in-One Center specified in step 1? Or,...........got any more suggestions?

OK Rick. I think you got it. Yes, Documents is greyed out, and No, I don't have ABBYY installed. I'll go work on that, and hopefully that'll solve my problem. I'll get back to you after finding and installing ABBYY and getting Documents turned on. Thanks for the help.

Well, ABBYY installed just fine. Documents is no longer greyed out, but the printer still says it cannot retrieve the list of scan destinations. I rebooted the computer and the printer, still no luck.

Edit: Just to make sure ABBYY installed OK, I opened it and scanned a document to PDF format. ABBYY scanned the document and I was able to save and open the document in Adobe Reader. When I try to scan from the printer, it still says it cannot retrieve the list of scan destinations.

Edit 2: I just reopened ABBYY and there was a message that it needed to be updated (I have ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint). When I click on the update link, it says error 404, that page can't be found. When I go to the website, it doesn't show FineReader 6.0 updates, only FineReader 11 and 12. Is that a problem?

shelquis,

Do things in this exact order.

Wake the printer.

Restart the computer and login. After the computer connects, wait 2 minutes. While waiting, on the printer, press the scan button.

After the 2 minutes, on the printer, select the computer that you want to scan to. Then it should generate the applications that you have added using the Update list of applications to send scans to

Then select the application, then scan. If using Adobe Reader, the printer will ask if you want to scan more than 1 mage, select yes of no, but have the next page ready when you select yes.

I suspect the problem with scanning is also related to the print only 1 print job, then restart the computer to print the rest of the print job(s). Internet Explorer 11 has caused a lot of issues with the Dell V Series printers.

Open Internet Explorer, click on Help, then click on About Internet Explorer. It should show the version there. If you have IE11, then go to control panel, Windows Update, Installed Updates, look for Internet Explorer 11. Click on Internet Explorer 11, uninstall.

Restart the computer, when prompted. Then see if your printer works.

The other option is to turn off the balloon tips for the printer.

Start, control panel, devices and printer, your printer, printing preferences, advanced, more options. Tell it to never show. The problem with this setting is you cannot tell if you're low on ink, printer jams, Etc.

OK Rick. Tried everything you suggested, exactly in the order specified, nothing fixed it.

I went through the restart, scan procedure you specified. Everything seems normal, but when selecting the computer to scan to, it searched for a minute and then reports that it is unable to retrieve a list of scan applications. So, no change.

I have IE11 and have had the balloon tips turned off for about a month to solve another problem. I decided to uninstall IE11 to see if that was causing the problem. It wasn't. I had exactly the same behavior with IE8 installed. I've since gone back to IE11 with balloon tips disabled. Still get the same scan behavior, i.e. it is unable to retrieve a list of scan applications.

Full Disclosure:      When I tried to follow your instructions in Update list of applications to send scans to , the only part of it I did was the four steps listed under Dell Printer Home. I couldn't figure out how to do the others.

shelquis,

Open Dell Printer Home
Click on settings
Scan destinations

If you have a 64-bit system, navigate to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader

You can either delete the first Adobe Reader or modify the file

Look for AcroRd32 or AcroRd32.exe
At the top, rename it Adobe Reader and in the drop down menu at the bottom, save file as a PDF

You can also add scan destinations, like Microsoft Word, Irfanview(Similar to paint) and other applications.

What virus program and firewall are you using?

I have a Dell V715w Printer, so I should be able to help with this.

shelquis,

The file is in the download for Adobe Reader.

Click on browse in your screenshot, the navigate to...

Once you click on Reader, inside you'll find the acrord32 file
(see screenshot below)

Yes, I have a 64-bit machine. I finally found Acrord32.exe,

Here's what my Scan Destination List looks like:

I showed the Adobe Reader destination info, above, and the new AcroRd32 destination below.

I'm probably doing something wrong. These seem like the same destination. What was I supposed to do?

My original destination and my new destination seem to be identical. Right? Now I should delete the original. Right?
