b1165nfw won't scan from unit or when using Dell software

I'm using the b1165nfw with Windows 10, and I have been for more than a year with no problems. I'm using a USB connection. There's no problem with printing.

Recently, the scanner stopped letting me initiate a scan and send to the PC. It lets me go through the process, but when it gets to "Connecting..." it never connects. 

So I tried to use Dell Scan Assistant, but it doesn't work either. I get the following error message: "The requested image could not be scanned. Please, check if your scanner is connected properly. If your system does not have enough memory, please, try to reduce the image resolution." My computer has 16GB of RAM, so that doesn't seem likely to be the problem.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the printer and the software 4 or 5 times now. I've tried using a WiFi connection and an Ethernet connection, but the same thing happens.

Note that the scanner DOES work with the Windows Scan app from the Microsoft Store, but its features leave something to be desired.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do next.
