AIO 922 freezes when printing pdf files

The printer has worked perfectly for a number of years then all of a sudden this problem started.  Whenever I print a pdf file I get part way through the first page of the document and then the printer stops.  The screen says it's printing but nothing happens.  The only option has been to disconnect and go back later on, try printing a regular file and then the original print job finishes.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and this worked for a short time but now I'm back to square one.  Anybody have any advice?

Thanks

maureenloza,

Print jobs usually spool on the computer sending the print job. If the computer has a small amount of RAM, then the print job will take longer. I have a print job I print, it is slow, takes a while, pauses while printing, but it does print completely. It depends on how much on the RAM you're using on the system.

Run Delete Print Jobs then restart your computer.

Start, control panel, devices and printers, right click on your printer, left click printer properties, advanced. Have your settings match mine.

Click apply, ok.

Hi maureenloza,

In addition to Rick’s suggestion, please try the below mentioned steps:

1. Open Command Prompt window, type “cmd” without quotes in start search and Right-click on cmd.exe, select Run as Administrator.

2. Copy the below mentioned commands in bold altogether:

net stop spooler

del %systemroot%\system32\spool\printers\*.shd

del %systemroot%\system32\spool\printers\*.spl

net start spooler

3. Right click in the Command Prompt window and paste it.

4. Restart the computer and try to print.

Please post the results.

I have the same problem with a Dell A10 966 printer. I will try the solutions above and see what happens but any other suggestions would be welcome. I can't understand why this problem has started to occur now after years of perfect printing.

Hi PeterRobin,

Perform the steps below and ensure that the services required for the printer are started.

1. Press the “Windows + R” to launch the run window.

2. Type “Services.msc” in the run window and hit the Enter key.

Right click each service mentioned below, click properties. Set the startup type as “Automatic” from the drop down menu and click “Start”. Please click “Apply” to save the changes.

The services to be enabled are:

  • Human Interface Devices (HID).
  • Printer Spooler.
  • RPC (Remote Procedure Call).
  • RPC Locator (Remote Procedure Call Locator).
  • Windows image acquisition (WIA).
  • Windows Installer.

Please post back for any further help.

Hi Nikhil D

I tried as you suggested but no luck - problem remains. I ended up taking my computer and printer into my local PC repair shop and their view was that the printer itself is the problem and they couldn't make it work with any pc in the shop. I find it hard to accept that the printer just suddenly 'broke'. I have re-installed the software and checked the services as above. The only one I was not able to change was the RPC (Remote Procedure Call).  The service status says 'started' but the start up (automatic) and start and stop buttons are greyed out and I cant change anything. I can scan, copy and print out some emails and parts of word documents - although usually only the first or last page. The percentage copied indicator gets to about 33% then freezes. The printer device guide says 'printing' and if I cancel the job it says 'print deleting' and nothing happens. The only way to clear this is to delete the file via Windows System32 which i picked up through a variety of on-line forums.

Any ideas? I am now thoroughly fed up and have started researching new printers as I need a reliable printer for home and home/office use. The way i feel at the moment, any replacement is unlikely to be a Dell. Sorry.

PeterRobin,

Please continue with Nikhil,

The only reason the printer would not install. A faulty Dell Series 5 ink cartridge, the sensor would say it's too low on ink or the printer no longer works. Does the printer had the option to copy, similar to a copying machine, without being connected to a computer?

Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the powerbrick for 60 seconds. This will reset any error message the printer is getting. Plug everything back in and power the printer on.

Open the printer with the power on and remove the Dell Series 5 black ink cartridge and make sure the tape is off the cartridge, then reseat the cartridge back in. Now do the same for the Dell Series 5 color cartridge. Now when you close the printer, it should print an alignment page. Any error messages?

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges have a sensor in them and cannot be refilled. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges

They can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's website.

Black cartridge = black side(left side)               Color cartridge = color side(right side)

Photo cartridge = black side(left side)              Color cartridge = color side(right side)

It is also possible to get a new ink cartridge with a bad sensor. Please take it to the place of purchase for a replacement one.

Hi Rick

Thanks for your help and advice. Sorry for delay in coming back. I followed your suggestions but unfortunately the problem persisted. After a deal of frustration I had to replace the printer as I needed a reliable for home/business purposes. My Dell 966 has gone to a good home though as it still photocopies and scans perfectly. Glad to say it will be of help to our local Scout group.
