A920, installation, Windows 7

I just purchased a pre-owned, refurbished OptiPlex 755 PC with Win 7 OS, and am trying to install my A920 All-In-One printer; this is the printer that came with my Dell Dimension (2400 series) desktop that I purchased about 7 years ago. I downloaded and installed (or so I thought) a 64 bit Vista driver that I read on the Dell website is supposed to be compatible with my 64 bit Windows 7 OS. I plugged in my printer, and opened up the file; I thought it was going to walk me through the set-up process, but it did not. My computer recognized my printer, and it even let me get into the All-in-One program. I was able to scan a color document (but it would not let me save it), I was unable to copy or print any documents, and the "empty cartridge" box came up saying that both black and color ink-jet cartridges were empty; they are not empty as I recently replaced both cartridges. Did I miss any steps, or not do something in the right order??? The printer did not give me a lick of problems on my Dell PC with Windows XP. I don't want to have to purchase another printer, if possible, so any help you can give me would be appreciated! Thank you! p.s. I have not loaded MS word onto my new computer, so I wonder if that has anything to do with the printer not working. (??)

monksplay,

The procedure is listed below. The OCR Program, found on the printer disk, is needed to scan to documents and fax.

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.

Disconnect the printer.

Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed.
Manual Printer Driver Removal

Download the Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 7 32-bit or the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).

Links to the patch/drivers can be found at...

Dell A920 All-In-One Inkjet Printer owners thread (W7)

Remember virus programs and firewalls will block communications.

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

SUCCESS!!! My printer now works! I had to remove the driver and download it a second time. Evidently, the first time I did not install the printer correctly. Thank you for your help, Rick!

Hi Rick,  My printer worked great for 2 months & now it's giving me troubles.  First off....if I put several documents in the queue, only one will print leaving the others "hung up".  I cancel printing for the other documents, and will then cancel the printed document and it will NOT go away.  In fact, the document stays in the queue, and will start reprinting even after I have rebooted my computer....this happens after I have completely powered down my computer and printer.  Second....I cannot print from any internet PDF files such as bank statements, receipts, etc.  It will go into the queue, and the paper will feed through the printer but NOTHING prints.  Then, my computer started crashing after I started having printer issues....maybe this was a coincidence????  It would randomly shut down and then give me a blue screen after I restarted my machine.  I finally did a system restore from an earlier time and it seemed to take care of the problem, although I am concerned that it will start crashing again since I am having printer problems again.  I am not sure if I should start a new thread, or if you can respond in this read.  At any rate,  I would appreciate your help!  I am very perplexed about this one.  :emotion-42:

Thank you!

monksplay,

In the December batch of Windows Updates, Microsoft installed Internet Explorer 11. IE11 had been causing printer problems.

Open Internet Explorer, click on Help, then click on About Internet Explorer. It should show the version there. If you have IE11, then go to control panel, Windows Update, Installed Updates, look for Internet Explorer 11. Click on Internet Explorer 11, uninstall.

Restart the computer, when prompted. Then see if your printer works.

To see the crash cause, download and install Resplendence Software - WhoCrashed

Click on analyze and then report back the information below.

I can no longer find my disk for the OCR software for my A920 printer.  Is there a place to download it?
