926, Windows 10 issues

Hello -

I am posting this for a neighbor who has called me up for assistance with this very old printer.  He uses an Acer Veriton desktop connecting wirelessly to his home router.

He was on Windows 7 Home and the printer was working fine.  He then bit on the free Windows 10 Home upgrade offer from Microsoft and that went right through.  This was about 1 and a half months ago.  The 926 AIO was actually working fine under Windows 10 Home 64-bit with no user interaction according to him.  Then one day last week, the printer stopped working and that's where I came in.

I know there are many articles and posts here with RockStar Rick K being heavily involved.  I read them over before going to his house.  So, I first took a look at the print queue from the Windows UI.  There were two jobs in queue with the top one showing "Error" and the second one showing "Sent to Printer".  I cleared both of these using the Windows UI. I then disconnected the printer from the USB port and also powered it off.  I disconnect the power cable from the wall.  Let stand for 5 minutes and then pressed and held in the power button to expunge the bad karma.

I then ran the printer queue clearance script.  No errors.  I tried to run the printer deletion utility.  I left it run for a good 45 minutes with the "Please wait..." panel up.  After than long the task was still showing "Running" but I didn't trust that.  I killed it at that point.  Now here's what I don't know.

Do I use the Vista 32 bit driver set?  I tried that and the extraction & set up went through.  I see only the scanner driver in Devices and Printers.  OK.  Connected up the printer to power.  Left the USB disconnected.  Brought the printer up.  Plugged in the USB next and sure enough the printer showed itself in Printers and Devices along with the scanner defined previously.  Dell software will print its own test page.  But the printer has a yellow exclamation point on it and upon hover Windows reports "Driver is unavailable".  So that failed.

Do I use the Vista 64 bit driver set?  Checked the print queue and the Windows Test Page shows "Error Printing" and I cleared that via Windows.  I re-ran the Dell printer clean up utility.  Again a long long wait (I went to lunch) and came back to that same "Please Wait" panel.  Since I didn't know how long to let it run again, I killed it.  Was at least a half hour.  Disconnected Printer USB and from the wall.  I then downloaded and ran the 64 bit Vista driver set.  Again, it goes through looking like it installed correctly.  Printers and Devices shows the scanner only - I think this is normal.  Let printer stand for another 5 minutes.  Pressed and held the power button for 10 seconds. Powered printer back up, seems fine.  Introduced the printer USB.  After a few moments checked Printers and Devices and the printer shows up but again with a yellow exclamation mark and the hover shows "Driver unavailable".

So what's the assessment here?  What did a do wrong and what can I change in terms of software or the sequence of applying this driver set?  And more importantly which should I use:  32 or 64 bit?

With Windows 10 and the Dell AIO 966, I was able to print test pages but nothing else. While the I will still get protection faults when initially trying to reach the printer properties, cancelling the warnings and declining the invitation to install the driver (yet again), I finally arrive at the printer properties. Selecting the "Advanced" tab, the default setting for the print processor was "LEMF", so I changed it to "NT EMF 1.008" and it prints great. Still problems with rundll32.exe errors, but they are now an nuisance, but otherwise everything works.

Buy a new printer for win 10. Tell him--Printers are cheap. Ink is the expensive component. The 926 will never work right with win 10.

Rick -

When I invoke Compatibility Mode (CM), I understand that one right clicks and selects.  But do I invoke CM on the downloaded compressed file or the setup.exe once the files have been un-zipped?  Is it necessary to invoke CM on ALL FILES once they are uncompressed?

Thanks for the help.

Hoibie,

The Dell 926 Printer has been an issue with Windows 10. People are telling me that the printer prints a test page but will not print. I usually recommend using the Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 32-bit or the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode you’ll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time (powered on). I have the Vista drivers located in the Dell 926 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

This is an older Dell printer, made for Dell by Lexmark, so no new drivers will be released.

Thank you!  I followed the steps by PudgyOne to get the Dell 926 AIO to install in Windows 10 but it still couldn't print until I followed your steps to change the Printer Properties' Print Processor as you directed.

I was also trying to help my sister-in-law with this problem. I kept getting non-English or incompatible drivers until I downloaded the one it linked to:

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/DriversDetails?productCode=dell-926&driverId=R150575

I used Compatibility Mode Windows 8.

Thank you SOOO MUCH. The driver that I downloaded from the link you provided (R150575) was actually in English (previous ones had been in Arabic and Czech) and loaded perfectly on my new Windows 10 computer. Not only did the test page print but Word documents are printing fine as well. I am aware that I will need to replace the 926 printer eventually but for now, I have a working printer. I appreciate your post!
