2135CN tray stopped feeding, any tips?

I have an old 2135CN that I bought years ago.  The paper tray stopped functioning a couple years ago.  No visible sign of issues but any attempt to use it results in paper jam and the top sheet is partially stuck. 

It's a nice color laserjet printer and I can use the single sheet feeder, but that's a huge pain.  I've looked around previously for a replacement tray but there are rare and therefore like $200.  Does anyone have any tips for what might cause this?  It may not be the tray.  At this point, I'll disassemble if it might help me identify the feeding problem.
