RAM extension of Dell Precision 7540

Helo to all. I do have 2x16GB RAM SODIMM 2666Mhz CL19 (Hynix SODIMM DDR4 2666MHz 16GB CL19 HMA82GS6JJR8N-VK). Works good. My friend gave me double of these: 2x32GB RAM SODIMM 3200Mhz CL20 (Kingston FURY SO-DIMM 64GB KIT DDR4 3200MHz CL20 Impact). Change to 3200 Mhz shouldn't be a problem, because of Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9850H CPU @ 2.60GHz which supports 3200Mhz.... But I awared of timing. Should be only CL19 be implemented?? Is Kingston on "Whitelist" or not? If these are not suitable, which couple of 2x32GB would you recommend??

Thanks a lot

You have CL=19 now, but with 2666 MHz RAM. You would not be able to use CL=19 with 3200 MHz RAM (and probably not CL=20 with 3200 MHz RAM). All things being equal, timing must increase with faster RAM. Kingston Fury is performance RAM, for gaming systems and overclocking situations. It is unlikely to work in your Precision laptop.

The Crucial RAM I specified should work for you. Perhaps you did not seat the RAM well. Or, if you didn't take ESD precautions as I indicated (repeatedly touching a metal case part is not sufficient mitigation) you could have caused a fault.

Kingston Fury may not work in your system, partly due to its timings. Crucial's 3200 MHz RAM has CL=22, whereas the Fury has CL=20.

Crucial is generally the most compatible RAM with Dell systems. Here are Crucial RAM options that Crucial guarantees to work or you may return it for refund.

As you want 64 GB total, here is a Crucial 64 GB matched pair (two x 32 GB) that is guaranteed to work.

You may try the Kingston Fury, as it won't harm anything if you are careful.

Whenever touching components or working inside a computer, wear a grounded wrist strap, also called anti-static wrist strap, ESD wrist strap, or ground bracelet. It's a cheap and sensible precaution. Rest the laptop on an anti-static mat or at least a reasonable alternative such as corrugated cardboard.

Yeah I have tried these last week: Crucial 64GB Kit (2 x 32GB) DDR4-3200 CL22 SODIMM which are declared as suitable, BUT the system definitely freezed and I had to reainstall my OS completely, so I don't trust it. They have CL 22. I do have CL 19 now. Why CL 22 (Crucial) doesn't bother and CL20 (Fury) bother?

I have a Precision 7540 with i7-9750H and Quadro T2000 since December 2019 and I upgraded to 4x16gb HyperX Impact (same as Fury Impact) 2666MHz CL15 in January 2020.

Since then it works without problems at the specified frequency and Cas Latency (2666MHz CL15).

9th generation Intel processors for laptops officially support 2666MHz memories, but Dell has implemented these precisions 7540/7740 XMP 2.0 where specific memories run at 3200MHz in this system.

Only two specific models, one from Adata (4x8gb: AO1P32MC8T1-BW3S and 4x16gb: AO1P32MCST2-BW4S) and the other from Kingston (4x8gb: XX60FT_MIE and 4x16gb: XCCT36-MIE),  run at 3200MHz on these systems.

Other 3200MHz memories may work, but will work at 2666MHz CL19.

3200mhz memory on the Precision 7540/7740 only works at that frequency with XMP 2.0.

Dell has certified only 2 specific memories to run at 3200mhz in these systems.

Any other 3200mhz memory (JEDEC) should work, but limited to 2666mhz.
