Precision M6500 will not start after installing i7-940XM CPU

This laptop works perfectly with the i7-740qm cpu. As for the usage of the processor that's anyone's guess, but for 2 cpu's to have the same fault? I might have to look into a new system board. Anyone know what the part# is for the system board?

Funny I have just been doing a google search and looking at that exact board, but I have found several different boards all with different part #'s. It is very hard to know which is the correct board.

Well, my drama with trying to upgrade my system cpu continues. I have just replaced my system board with another Pt. # 0GNN2M, but the laptop will still not start with the i7-940xm cpu. I am at a loss as to why this is still happening. I will find an i7-840q and try that and see how it goes.

Hello @m_fry , you will need system board 0R1203.  While this board will work with other CPUs, all 8 of M6500 with i7-940xm I looked at, they were all using this same board.

Personally, I wouldn't put too much times and money into upgrading a laptop, just doing any repair as needed because some parts are harder to find, top performance has limitation, higher risk of damage (comparing to desktop).  While a newer model like a 7520 can be had for around 250 USD, fully loaded.

No, no solution as yet. I have picked up an 840qm and will install that, just waiting for it to arrive.
