Precision 7740 BIOS doesn't like Crucial P3 500GB M.2 NVMe

I just bought this laptop as a refurbished A Grade but I'm wondering if it has motherboard problems?

The BIOS is driving me crazy, I install the drive only for data, I start the laptop but the BIOS takes too long to load, it loses some settings in the memory such as SATA configuration and clock settings.

I enter the BIOS, I make the adjustments and Windows can finally load. But at the next startup the laptop has the same issues over and over.

No, it's not the CMOS battery because I uninstalled the drive and the laptop just loads fine.

I installed the drive in both the slot next to the battery and to another next to the main drive.

The BIOS is updated to the latest version, Windows 10 Pro, the drive is formatted and it shows in Windows.

Can anyone please give a suggestion?

Hi

Could you post a screen shot of the partitioning?

@anne_droid Hello, there is NO partition. Drive one is for the OS and drive two is only for data. In the BIOS I can see the drive one set as drive 0.

Hi

No partitions, no work.

W10 usually has 4 partitions on the drive, your second drive is gonna need at least 1.

If it is partitioned in an unacceptable manner it wont work.

So without any definitive info I am unable to help any further, hopefully someone better able will be along and able to help.

Thanks for the help and thanks to @anne_droid too.

I was thinking about standard disc partition not the system reserved ones.

I bought this laptop with Windows pre installed and yes I know how to install the OS and how to assemble computers.

By the way, is the partition 4 a OS recovery backup image?

@Badmont

Hi

Well it differs from mine....

in that I opted for the larger BOOT partition of 260 MB that is some times required by some Linux Distros, and I do have the 4 W11 partitions.

I also added a RECOVERY partition for the FACTORY FRESH install from the Manufacturer, and a Linux Mint partition and a DATAstor, so its quite busy, but hopefully recoverable/repairable.

NB: You appear to have an uEFI boot partition, but your main Windows partition is marked as the BOOT partition, and IF that is actually where your BIOS boot Manager points then it may cause a problem IMHO.

You do appear to be missing the Microsoft Reserved partition.

Where does your BIOS boot manager point?

How many entries are listed.

I am inclined to use Paragon Partition Manager CE (free version) to manage my parts in Windows and Gparted in Linux.

If in doubt please ask.

@Badmont

""By the way, is the partition 4 a OS recovery backup image?""

Dunno.

IF it is, HOW2 access it?

What does it contain, because the W11 .iso is 10 times that size.

You can give those small parts a DRIVE letter and make them mountable in a DOS window to list the contents.

EG:

On my very old HP I knew there was Diagnostics, repair etc in case of need, and my old Lenovo too.

What you have I know not.

If in doubt please ask.

@anne_droid Of course your disk management result looks different.

As you can see in my laptop there are two system reserved partitions (partition 1 and 4), I think one of them was set during a previous OS installation, by the vendor, while the second one was set during a following OS installation, still by the vendor.

Well I still only count 3 partitions in your first picture of your primary drive, DISK 0.

Bye.
