Precision 7720 - Headphone jack won't work unless restart

I have used speakers or headphones in the audio jack for a few years without issue.

Used to be if I unplugged speakers and plugged in the headphones (or vice versa) that worked. Now if I unplug anything from the headphone audio jack and then plug something new into it only the computer built in speakers will play. It will not recognize a new device plugged in until the computer is restarted.

It's like it's lost it's auto-detect of what is plugged into the jack. It's not my speakers or headphones. They work fine.

The computer only shows one option for audio output... Speakers/Headphones (Realtek Audio) so I can't switch it to anything else.

Is there a driver I need to disable / re-enable, a new driver, a Windows Update patch, a Dell patch?

Thanks.

You can download and reinstall this Realtek High Definition Audio Driver.  Reboot the system and connect your headphones for testing.  There will be a popup asking to confirm the device plugged in.  Also, do not disable Realtek in Starts up apps.
