Precision 7560 BIOS update bricked
Hi,
I have a brand new Precision 7560 (XEON/512GB HDD/32GB) out of the box, ran through Windows updates as part of set up process and identified urgent BIOS update to 1.5.0 (I believe). Laptop restarted and completed Updating Firmware process (Flash Progress reach 100%) - but machine will now not boot.
Pressing power button, the power light comes on for 3 seconds then turns off. Holding down the power button results in power light staying on for 15 seconds, but turns off again. During this period the screen remains completely off.
Have tried plugging in external monitor, booting with battery disconnected and using only AC power, also tried F2 and F12, as well as Boot Recovery (Ctrl + Esc) but laptop appears completely bricked.
Machine purchased through ERP and associated corporate Dell Premium subscription, but no immediate solution has been offered. Loathed to replace the machine as lead time to get shipped for this one was 8 months.
Very grateful in advance for any advice. Thanks.

We tried reaching you on a private message asking for the Service Tag number to ascertain the warranty but did not receive a response. Please feel free to reply to the private message whenever you are available.

You should have BIOS Recovery 3 as shown on this page. It may help while you wait for assistance from Dell tech support.

Yes, the motherboard was being replaced and thorough check up was done and then system was sent back to you.

I ran into the same problem with my 7560's all configured with a Xeon Processor.
Once Dell Command Update or SupportAssist upgrades the BIOS (happened to me for 1.8 and 1.10.1), the laptop dies and enters the "try to power on every 22 seconds but only stay alive for .25 seconds" cycle. In this state, MBIST, Power+Fn, Power+M won't work. However, holding D and waiting for the 0.25 second power cycle to try to turn on will trigger the Display Test -- at which point the light blink code will show 2,1 (2 Amber, 1 White) which indicates CPU Failure.
The standard solution offered by Dell is to swap the motherboard. That will work.
However, if you can get to the Coin Cell inside and temporarily remove it so that the NVRAM will clear, I found that the laptop was happy again. NOTE: you have to practically disassemble the entire laptop (remove battery, inner frame, heatsink assembly, and enough of the motherboard to get tweezers in) to get there because the coin cell connector cable and port is sandwiched between the motherboard and the keyboard shield -- and there isn't any easy way to get to the connector from any existing holes (top, side, or bottom).

this happened trying to update to the new 1.10.1 also? Is this just running the bios update through Command Update or Support Assist? What if you just download the bios update from the dell support site and then install?

Hi to all.
Yesterday 15.4.2022 my dell precision 7560 was bricked after bios update.
The update was executed from Command Update.
Do you think that the problem was occurred because of a hardware failure on the motherboard or it was a software issue (bios update process)?
Regards
Vassilis

@VasilisG
what bios version did you have on the system and what version did it try to update to? Did you have it connected to a dock? Anything else connected other than the power cord?
After the update runs in windows and the machine reboots, what happened?
I just updated a 7760 from 1.7.0 to 1.10.1 using the exe downloaded from the support site. After running it in windows and it shows a list of what is being updated, the system rebooted and the update took around 5 minutes.

After these issues Dell "retired" both 1.10.1 and 1.11.0 - back in April. Now it appears they've been newly released (6-13 and 14). File size is the same - don't have checksum info on the originals. What's to say these won't brick systems now. Already tried on one system and it doesn't allow rollback - just like it did in April. What's the deal?

Guess why I’m here! Just guess! Rofl. Bricktastic. This is after the motherboard was already replaced once when this firmware hit a few months back. Just ran DCU and firmware update. Figured couldn’t happen again. Word to the wise, this update is still basically a virus.

@stsbrad
did you have any devices connected to the computer other than the power cable?
