Precision 5550 - OCP fuse 2 fault

Hi all, I have flashing LED error 1 amber 4 white that is not documented in the service manual (not good).

BIOS says that yesterday an event was logged: "OCP fuse 2 fault" (OCP is overcurrent protection).

No information again in the service manual nor specifically googling for it.

Anybody knows what this OCP fuse 2 refers to?

The computer is working fine, maybe a bit too hot. Of course if a fuse is blown, then there should be no current and something should have stopped working; or, this is a resettable fuse and somehow the computer knows it is not working properly? ... don't know.

If it helps there is also CAPS LOCK LED stuck on, but Caps Lock works although stuck lit up.

Thanks in advance!

I have solved in the meanwhile.

Cause: Chinese USB extender, with something dead inside drawing abnormal current from the USB 3 port.

The OCP fuse did its job, but it's not written clearly that this fuse is for the USB.

Trial & error associating the abnormal heat on the let top side.

Why the Caps Lock was lit on that's still a mistery. However, no flashing LED and no stuck lit on Caps Lock any longer. The root cause is always China! :)

Hi Andrea,

Your reply is extremely helpful for me and just wonder if you can share any insights on how to reset this OCP fuse.  Thank you in advance!

@Spmaas

Hi Seth,

Also got this problem on my XPS 9510.  Just wonder if you have solved it.  Thanks!

@Reverie-Metherlence in the end the motherboard was replaced to fix it

@Reverie-Metherlence

My solution was simply to bin the Chinese USB extender.

Then, while studying the thing for a couple of hours, I saw that resetting such fuses can be accomplished through the BIOS: the problem is that not all BIOS versions are the same, and I saw some examples and discussions in the Internet for different DELL models. Of course a factory reset is way too much.

Of course, if the cause of fuse tripping is not removed, you don't see the alarm cleared. It will simply remain there and you even think you were not successful in resetting it.

Thank you for your reply and that's really helpful!  I removed any docker but the problem still doesn't go away.  I checked the BIOS but there doesn't seem to have an option to reset fuse alert unfortunately.  Replacing the whole motherboard for a small fuse seems to be an overkill though...

@Spmaas omg, do you have XPS or Precision?  May I ask how much it costs... It seems to me that replacing the motherboard to fix a fuse is an overkill though....

@Reverie-Metherlence You are right. Just to add a tiny bit of info:

- the error was not immediately the OCP fuse, but a stuck Caps Lock light, frequent reset of the computer (black screen and reboot), serious problems to sharing the clipboard. And the hot top-left area, then after fiddling with all software issues, drove me to the right problem [ hardware is more reliable indeed :) ]

- it took a couple of days to arrive to the conclusion that the USB was not working well; typing something like "hot USB" "excessive current ..." I came across one discussing resettable fuses, and then went to the BIOS. There I saw a warning of an activated fuse (thanking the Almighty & DELL a resettable one). Now it has disappeared, and I cannot recall if there was a kind of reset of the alarms, a toggle, or what.

@andrea.mariscotti Thank you for your detailed reply which is super helpful.  I checked the BIOS of XPS but unfortunately it does not give me an option to reset fuse alert...  I guess I have to take it apart and replace the fuse manually though...
