Precision 5440 and Windows 11
Hi all, I need to do a clean install of Windows 11 on my M5440 which, according to the Dell note, has been tested for compatibility and is supported.
Unfortunately, when using the Windows Media Creation tool, the installer stops and prompts for missing drivers (doesn't say which). And there are no recovery Win11 images available from Dell.
Any advice on how to deal with the driver prompt or locate a suitable image?

I assume you meant the M5540 as there is no 5440 model. If you get a message along the lines of your system is missing a driver and insert disk with driver etc. then it probably pertains to an M.2 SSD which I believe you must have installed. Try putting the USB drive into another USB port. If that does not help then have a look at this video. It is meant for Windows 10 but it would appear that the issue remains in Windows 11.

Sadly, no luck. I'm pretty sure the issue is the nvme driver and the install can pull files from both USB ports but can't expand the main m.2 nvme drive. I've grabbed the latest from Samsung (for the SSD 970 EVO Plus) - the install sees it and grabs it - but it doesn't resolve the issue. The drive is not in RAID mode (in ahci)...

Windows 11 has been pushed as an update based on region, could you please clarify why the upgrade/update is not an option? As that would be the primary mode that we can recommend for Windows 11 compatible system which was purchased with Windows 10.

Hi There,
Thank you for contacting us, we see that you seem to be having problems installing the operating system on your system, firstly we would like to capture the chain of events here, before we start providing steps, that will help us understand this better and also drive through the appropriate steps.
Do let us know what was the reason to perform a clean installation while Windows 11 can e upgraded or updated from the existing windows 10 version?
What is the current status of the computer? Does it boot to Windows 10 or not?
If no, then what happens if you just power on the system? share the error message if any.
And which OS version do you have created on the USB key right now? Have you had chance to test if that works on any other system?
-Regards,
Paventhan M

Maybe instead of questioning my business requirement, we could focus on solving the technical issue.

Hi there,
I need to perform a clean install. Upgrade/update is not an option.
The M5540 is currently Windows 10 with all updates applied. It boots fine.
The USB key has Windows 11 created by the Windows Media Creator tool. I cannot test on another system.
Thanks

Thanks for everyone's support. Looks like it was an issue with the driver for the USB port. Switched and it could successfully read/write to the USB drive...
