Precision 3561 Ubuntu 22.04 LTS to 24.04.1 LTS upgrade wifi issue solution

Now that Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS is out and the breaking issues were solved, I did the upgrade on my Dell Precision 3561. After the upgrade, it would no longer connect to wifi. After some trial and error it turned out the laptop was still booting the old oem kernel instead of the latest generic kernel.

Boot into newer generic kernel

I you run into this issue, the easiest solution is to press Esc while booting to go into Grub. If you are presented with the Grub commandline, execute the command 'normal' and press Esc once more to get into the menu. Then in the Grub menu select 'Advanced options for Ubuntu' and select the newer generic kernel to boot into that. Then wifi should work fine.

Remove old oem-kernel

For a permanent solution to boot into the newer generic kernel:

1. Check which kernel version you are now using on the commandline using uname -srn You should make sure you booted in the newer generic kernel and it works as it should.
2. List all installed linux images: dpkg-query -l 'linux-image*'
3. If you are using the generic image, verified it works, but  still have the older oem image as default for boot, you can remove the older installed kernel: sudo apt remove linux-image-5.14.0-1048-oem. The install should automatically update the grub configuration.

Helpful debugging

I concluded the source of the issue with some checks:

Verify that I was on the older oem kernel:

uname -r

I noticed issues for loading firmware:

sudo journalctl -b 0 | grep iwlwifi
