Overheat

Yesterday, Precision 7550 abruptly shut down. On restart, BIOS indicated overheat. On restart, ran Dell diagnostics, everything OK, including fan, which switched ON and OFF. Downloaded Dell Power Management, found was set to "Optimized". Set to "Cool", heard fan briefly run, then OFF. Downloaded Core Temp application. When idle, cores show mid 40s celsius, but with activity cores rise to low 80s and one hit 100C. Would like to lower temperature threshold when fan is run but Dell does not appear to allow user such control. Found third party utility to lower temperature threshold but could not install [2007 post]. What can be done to lower temperature threshold when fan is run?

Open the base cover and checking for sight of dust.  Air dusting all the fans and vents.  Long duration of high tempt operation may have dried out the thermal paste.  If comfortable with teardown process and component removal, just perform a thermal paste replacement.  Beside some high quality paste, acquire some 1 mm soft gel thermal pad to replace any damaged or aging pads.

Above is the bottom of the motherboard. Curiously, see several numbered screws not seated, and not by me. But the CPU needing the paste is on the other side of the motherboard, right? BTW, both fans were clean and spun freely. When the system gets hot, I can hear both fans turning.

The thermal paste is underneath the heatsink, between the two fans.  The whole upper part which contains the fans and heatsink will come off as a whole unit.

Refer to this procedure for removing the heat-sink assembly.
