Mobile Precision 5690

I'm trying to update BIOS for my Precision 5690.

My os is Windows 11. BitLocker is turned off on my machine.

I was able to upgrade BIOS from 1.4 to 1.6, then to 1.9.

However, the update process failed with error message "intermediate steps ...", then abord the process.

I'm stuck at 1.9. The latest BIOS is 1.13.

I tried upgrading through DELL supportasistent and through downloading standalone driver.

The same error persists.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@anne_droid Thanks for the Info. The BIOS on my pc was not upgraded but it still boots. Do you mean I can update BIOS using the recovering procedure? It says .rcv file is only for BIOS recovery when the system won't boot.

@LarryLDell

CPG BIOS Executable for Windows/DOS
File Name:Precision_5690_1.13.1.exe
File Size:25.91 MB
Format Description:
This file format consists of a BIOS executable file. The Universal (Windows/MS DOS) format can be used to install from any Windows or MS DOS environment.
To ensure the integrity of your download, please verify the checksum value.
MD5:
7689b0e5b5cc3b6522fbd43222bb6faf
SHA1:
38ad0cb37d82d7c2015ba2d300030b966da1c960
SHA-256:
80fb433ffb8b55b9978be46bc842f827b54a97356f15eb94dcd0d9af349aa51a
I assume you have the above file, and checked it's integrity.
This may not be at all helpful, but.....
The POWERSHELL part should apply to your download, hopefully.
Naturally I use LibreOffice, but excel should, if not excel at it, at least cope with the task.

Then you either make a bootable USB or let windows do the install.
Unfortunately I cannot take you any further with the process, Sorry, but I don't have the appropriate hardware to test it out on.

@anne_droid The 1.13 BIOS update file has the correct hash. I verified it following your instruction. However, running the update file to upgrade BIOS still fails with the same error.

Is "BIOS recovery" my only choice now? It does not seem to say bootable USB. Is it safe to recover BIOS to a different (higher) version? Thank you for your help!

@LarryLDell

Apologies, but I cannot specifically say yes.

I believe that I would try and do it, but that is my choice on my hardware.

@anne_droid I tried BIOS recovery, tried load BIOS default. No luck, same error "the required intermediate step did not complete ..."

This issue starts from BIOS version > 1.10

I was able to update from 1.4 to 1.9. but BIOS version >1.9 fail with this error.

Does any Dell support personal have any ideas?

I have the same problem.  Dell Precision 5690 BIOS update.  I was able to get it to version 1.9.1.  But was not able to update further to 1.10, 1.11, or 1.12.  Trying from Dell Command Update, directly running the bios exe file, or F12 BIOS Update menu using exe file on USB drive.  All fail with the same error: "Required intermediate step did not complete successfully."
