M6800 Upgrade to GTX 980M

I have a precision m6800, and i want to upgrade to a gtx 980m, but I want to know if i need to cut the heatsinks or anything. Is there anything I need to know before trying this?

We tried reaching you on a private message asking for the Service Tag number to ascertain the warranty but did not receive a response. Please feel free to reply to the private message whenever you are available.

I did this, I put a GTX980M 8GB in my M6800. While Gaming works fine, benchmarking results in throttling down the GPU due to heat issues (CPU is i7-4800MQ). The 980 has some modules that uprate, so I had to place a 2mm thick heat pad instead of heat paste on the GPU. The last easily working driver is 419.35; after that I often had success with manually installing drivers by device manager, but I didn't had any advantages. In summary, it's much better than the K3100M that I had before.

I can't remember certainly, I think I cut it by hand, so that it covered the whole GPU area. As I wrote, I needed a 2mm thick pad.

Laptop is still running fine with that. Throttling down in benchmark tests due to heat, but no crashes and no problems during gaming.

Do you know what thermal pads sizes uses for the 980m upgrade? I have the amd heatsink I will do this upgrade today.

No problem, I had to modify my heatsink and changed the bracket to the 980m. I wanted to know how you managed to modify the Nvidia inf files for the m6800. I've made several attempts, but my ID doesn't work: it's PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_15CD1028. It seems like you need to find the right file for Dell and Alienware, but after that, I'm not sure how to proceed with the modification.

I just extracted the latest driver with 7zip, then choose the driver manually with device manager and clicked the top GTX980M from the list by chance, it worked now several times with several drivers. With Nvidia installer, the 419.35 works fine. All newer drivers can only be installed manually.
