Dell Precision 7670 Diag light flashing, but no issues

Hi all,

I currently picked up a Dell Precision 7670 that is having an odd issue. When the system starts up, the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys do not change their LED indicator when hit, but do activate/ deactivate on each hit. Also, the laptop is flashing a 2 amber 8 white code, which points to LCD failure.

The problem is that I am currently using this laptop to write this post, so the LCD is not having any issues. I also noticed that this issue does not always persist between restarts, as it will randomly go away and come back when restarted.

This laptop I picked up still has Dell's ProSupport warranty, so would it be worth contacting them to see if this is a board issue? I have gone through and done all BIOS updates that the system had pending with no changes.

Before going further, remove the base cover and disconnect the battery. With the system unplugged, hold the power button for 30 sec.

Reassemble and check again.

It sounds like this might have been a second-hand purchase - if it is, note that the warranty must be transferred before it will cover your possession of the system.  For that you will need the current registered owner's information and to complete the form here

Thank you! This is a second hand purchase, so I will be contacting the seller to get that information.

I already tried the full power reset with the battery unplugged, to no avail. I also tried just reseating the LCD connector.

Having this exact same issue on a Dell Precision 7770.

Original symptom from the user was that the battery was not detected at all all of a sudden, and if he unplugged from external power, the laptop would totally die. Drained flea power and did a bunch of other stuff... not sure what got the battery going again but eventually it started working. never once had a LCD issue, and then go the same 2 amber 8 white. For me, if I turn the laptop off, unplug power, then hold M or D while pressing power to run the M-BIST or LCD-BIST, the 2/8 goes away..... UNTIL you shut the laptop down, and boot back up WHILE power is plugged in externally. As soon as you do that, the 2/8 starts up again. And just like yours, the Caps and Num Lock also are trapped in one state (for me, caps light off, num light on -- even though I can still toggle between having them both off an on.)

Trying to get Dell to just swap the motherboard. Im guessing theirs some wacky ass power transient over some obscure transistor or something.

The only possible clue I have, was that this user was using a WD19DC Dell Dock, and on the same week, another user who used the same dock also suddenly started experiencing some weiiiiird issues on their Dell Precision 5570 (totally different set of issues.... but maybe the dock is cursed??)

Idk man. did you have any luck?
