Dell 7680: can a CAMM unit be upgraded to use SODIMM ECC DRAM?
I am thinking of buying a Dell 7680 from Dell Outlet.
The most common configuration that shows up is one which has:
CPU = Intel Core 13th Generation i5-13600HX Processor and
DRAM = 16GB (1X16GB) 4800MHz DDR5 Non-ECC CAMM Module
I am OK with that CPU.
But the DRAM will not work for me:
--it is way too small
--it is unreliable (non ECC) DRAM; ECC DRAM is an absolute requirement for me
--it is a CAMM module (good in theory, insanely expensive in practice)
I know from doing this custom config of a 7680 that this CPU supports SODIMM ECC DRAM.
What I need to know is if I buy a 7680 that was originally a CAMM version, can it be upgraded to use SODIMM DRAM?
I think that their used to be an official way: a web search found this:
From that link, It seems that Dell used to sell an official CAMM --> SODIMM interposer board (part number RN12H).
Unfortunately, Dell seems to have dropped that part.
I think that you can buy 3rd party replacements like this.
But I would not gamble on this. One reason being that I value Dell Pro support and its warranty, and would never do anything to void that, which this might.
