Battery draining super fast

My battery on the precision 5550 is doing something very weird. When charging, it can get to 45% then suddenly show that its fully charged. When i unplug and use it normally, it will drain normally but on a certain %age like 56%, it will jump to zero and start warning that i should plug in. Then only a few seconds later, it shuts down. What causes this and what is the easy fix?

Most likely the battery is on its way out and will need replacement.

Run powercfg /batteryreport at a command prompt with admin privilege.  What are the current and design capacity figures for the battery?

Well the best solution will be to change/replace old battery with the new battery and also check the battery health report.

Before replacing the battery: First calibrate your existing battery by fully draining it empty: Use it on battery until it shuts down. Then start it up and let it sit on the BIOS screen until it shuts down again.

Then fully recharge it.

What this achieves is that it teaches the BMS again what the "full" and "empty" points are. So that the battery meter is correct again. When you use a laptop for a long time. Especially when you mostly use it on AC grid power the battery meter slowly gets off. And then Windows may think the battery is empty when it is full or "plugged in, not charging" below 100% when it is actually already full.
