Battery draining rapidly on laptop while connected to charger

Hello,

We run a fleet of Dell computers and have recently started running into an issue with 2 of our machines in which they rapidly lose power/battery while connected to AC. The issues happen randomly sometimes a week apart.

The machines -

  • Precision 5570 / Windows 10 Pro
  • Precision 5680 / Windows 11 Pro

Here is an example of what we are seeing below I ran a powercfg battery report about 10 minutes apart showing the battery continuously draining while on AC.

We have swapped power adapters, installed all available Dell and windows updates, configured Modern Standby Mode per Article Number: 000143524, and some other random recommendations found on Dell and Windows forums with no luck.

We have a ticket open with Dell on both of the laptops. We have run the ePSA and the diagnostics are finding no issues with hardware. Dell is wanting us to reinstall the OS on the machines which we will do however I wanted to see if the community had any help to offer us while we get these devices shipped to us from our remote workforce.

Thanks!

  1. I leave a 5680 laptop at work so I can login remotely and work from home.
  2. Have  tried setting BIOS power setting to AC on continuous and it fails as you describe.
  3. Have tried setting custom charging in BIOS to charge to 80% and start charging at 60%.  It  will charge to 80% but does not start charging at 60% and instead continues to discharge to ~3% and goes then to sleep. and I cannot connect.
I can see that it is discharging but cannot find a way to get it to go back to charging.
  4. When either of these happen I have to go into work, shutdown the computer, and then restart.  It will then start charging again.

Help please.
