3 Monitors

Hello! I have a Dell Precision 3561 with a Dell docking station WD19TBS. It also says Reg Type No.: K20A001 and Reg Model: K20A.

I am trying to connect three monitors. All three work for a while and then one shuts off. The one that shuts off is the one that is connected via the HDMI cable. does anybody know why this happens?

Thanks!

Hi, we will be happy to look into your concerns. Could you please direct message us with the service tag of your notebook?

We will require a few more details as well.

1. The other 2 ports you are using on the dock.

2. The resolution you are running on these monitors.

3. Precision 3561 may not have enough bandwidth to run 3 displays in addition to the internal display.

I will be able to share more details, once we have the tag.

Hi DELL-Cares or DELL- Jesse L,

I also use the docking station K20A001 and am having issues with 3 monitors. I don't use the primary monitor on my tablet DELL (Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8350U CPU @ 1.70GHz 1.90 GHz). These are my 3 external monitors:

1. LG Ultragear 1920x1080

2. HP Z24i 1050x1680

3. Dell SE2717H/HX 720x480

I cannot get that 3rd monitor to use finer resolution. Is the problem the docking station limitations? Is there a way to balance out the resolutions (maybe taking away from the others) to get it as close as possible to standard/finer resolution? Please help.

@EddieAv  The K20A001 is a regulatory code, not a product model.  Can you check whether you have a WD19 or a WD19TB?  Those are product models, and you should see one of those printed on the underside of the dock.  Please also specify the model of your actual system.  Just knowing the CPU model as you posted doesn't provide quite as much useful information.

But if you have a regular WD19 rather than a WD19TB, then based on the age of your CPU, it's very likely that the as-designed maximum display setup you can run through a regular USB-C dock like the WD19 is dual displays at 1920x1080, with no ability to run three displays at meaningful resolutions.  This is related to the video bandwidth available between the system and dock.  If on the other hand you have a WD19TB, which is a Thunderbolt dock, and you ALSO have a Thunderbolt-capable system, then you should be able to run triple 1080p easily, but in that case it's possible that your system is not currently using the WD19TB in actual Thunderbolt mode, in which case it might be performing like a regular WD19 and therefore limited to dual 1080p.  But that would be fixable.

And even if your equipment combination does turn out to make triple 1080p through the dock impossible, then depending on your system model, there might be an option to run the third display some other way that would allow all three displays to run at their native resolution -- such as connecting one display directly to your system rather than through the dock.  But I would definitely not recommend trying to run all three displays in some sort of "compromised" resolution.  Even if that were technically possible to achieve, running LCD displays below their native resolution introduces scaling artifacts, which can create blur that is especially apparent with text, and in addition to not looking very good, it can increase eye strain.
