Validated/compatible memory list for Precision 5820 (Xeon/ECC)???

Maybe I'm looking right past it, but I can not find any list/QVL of tested/validated/compatible memory modules for my Precision 5820.

I got it with four SK/Hynix 8GB 2666mhz DDR4 low voltage CL19 ECC modules, which work just fine. And not finding a QVL or list of any sort, I just got four more of pretty much the exact same thing, but denser 32GB modules with the same or very similar chips, but just more of them on each module. Same maker, same specs, just denser modules.

But all I get is a black screen, 3 loud beeps and a steady white power light. I see the list of power light (yellow and/or white) codes in the User Manual for the 5820, but I see no reference to the beeps in the manual. And steady white is supposedly proper functioning. I left it on for a long time, just to see, because if it was doing some kind of POST memory test, 160GB of memory is a lot to test! But after about 10 or so minutes the fans start to slowly crank up louder and louder and that indicates heat and that doesn't feel right to me? Removing the new modules the system boots and runs fine.

So, I'd really love to know some 16 or 32GB modules I KNOW are going to work on this machine. Anyone know where I can find a compatible memory list for these machines?

Taking your suggestion I looked for 32GB modules listed on 5820 benchmarks. I didn't find a good way to filter, so I just looked at a bunch of benchmark pages and looked on each for 32GB ram modules and made a list. I did not go through all 5820 benchmarks on Userbenchmark, and I think I was looking a list showing faster benchmark results first, so results may be more represented by w 2200 series CPUs than the average on the site. Pleased to see the M393A4K40CB2-CTD I ordered on this list. And while some similar Hynix modules to my Hynix HMA84GR7AFR4N-VK TF modules that didn't work are on the list, the exact modules I am returning are not to be found. Maybe mine are just a bit older than the ones that work, mine being AFRAN, while the ones listed are AJR4N, CJR4N, DJR4N.

Here's what I found:

W 2200 Series CPU

W-2295 Samsung M393A8G40AB2-CWE 1x31GB
W-2295 Samsung M393A8G40AB2-CWE 1x31GB

W-2265 Samsung M393A4K40CB2-CTD 2x31.5GB

W-2255 Samsung M393A4K40DB2-CTD 4x31.8GB
W-2245 Samsung M393A4K40DB3-CWE 4x31.8GB

W-2295 Samsung M393A4K40EB3-CWE 6x31.8GB

W-2265 Hynix HMA84GR7CJR4N-XN 4x31.8GB

My Samsung M393A4K40CB2-CTD works! Not only that, but, although 4x32gb + 4x8gb is not a supported memory configuration, it does work! So I have 160gb ram now and while I haven't done a proper memory test, everything seems to work perfectly.

Tried the 32gb Hynix modules with the 32gb Samsung modules just in the name of science, and indeed they wouldn't work like this either. This machine is just very picky about which Hynix 32gb modules it'll work with it seems.

First try a supported configuration

mazzinia_0-1660170262162.jpeg

and that means 128gb using the 4 x 32gb modules you purchased

Thanks, Mazz. Yeah, tried all configurations I could think of. One 32GB, Two 32GB. 8GB in each of the original places (Dimm 1-4) with the 32GB in the other Dimms (5-8), then the opposite. Only the 32GB in dimms 1-4. Same thing. If there's one of these new modules, I get three beeps, then nothing.

But looking at the compatible memory configuration list, seems 4x8gb and 4x32gb is NOT a acceptable config. But that's ok as long as I could do 4x32gb. But that doesn't work either, even though it is on the supported configuration list.

I would really like to see a validated ram module list, because I assumed these SK/Hynix modules were shipped with this machine from Dell, but maybe they were put in by the previous owner. Or maybe those are valid modules for the 5820, but the high density modules of the exact same chips are not?

WHY does this forum let me upload images to my posts and then just doesn't show them???

Dell, you are one of the biggest computer makers on the planet, get some decent software for your forums!!!!

And having to do a captcha for EVERY POST??!! Ludicrous. People are here doing TONS of tech support for you Dell. For free! Do not make it hard for us!!!!

Well... I'm not sure what to say, those rams "should" be ok. But dell systems are a bit picky about ram makers

Dell branded sticks, would work. Crucial tends to work .. others may pitch in to add more known options.

Thanks for that Redxps630. So odd, the 8 and 16GB Hynix HMA--------VK modules seem to work fine, but these 32GB versions I have don't?

But on close inspection, I do have firmware 1.3 from 2019, not the latest 1.7. So I'll try updating that before I give up on these modules. But it's funny, the 1.7 firmware showed up in Windows Update like any other update and selected it and it did something, but it's been a while so I can't say exactly, but what ever it did, the update didn't work.

As for uploading images, they show when approved.

I don't know what level you have to be for captcha to not show for every post.  But it wasn't long ago a bot took over a thread I answered in.  It made 100's of replies and due to such, I received 100's of emails.  Dell forum management was able to catch it and make it stop.  Of course, it was on a Friday evening.

Well, I'm giving up on these Hynix 32GB 2Rx4 PC4-2666V-RB2-11   HMA84GR7AFR4N-VK. Filed for a return.

No one has brand/model/specs on verified working 32GB modules for a 5820??? There are reasonable prices on 4x32gb kits specifically listed for Dell 5820, but I kind of doubt they actually came from or were actually tested in an 5820? I am desperate for images or detailed brand/model/specs of 32GB modules verified working in a 5820! Other than paying a beyond ludicrous/insulting $1700+ FOR EACH MODULE for new modules from Dell, I don't know what else to do to ensure compatibility/functionality.

One more thing. I did upgrade to BIOS 2.21.0 (07/18/2022). The only difference this made with one or more of these 32gb modules installed was instead of getting one long beep then nothing, I get a short beep and the proper power button blink code for a memory error.

And my posted images never did show up??!! Annoying.

Hello, you may want to check on UserBenchmark site.  It listed the compatible RAM validated from all tester's systems.  There is no actual picture, only RAM models.  I see grade A system for as little as $449 usd with 32GB of RAM, so do not pay Dell listed price if you are in the right mind.

I've ordered some Samsung M393A4K40CB2-CTD modules as they appear to be very similar to the Dell branded SNPTN78YC/32G or A9781929 modules.

So, we shall see.

@Dylanear

I use JEDEC 1.2v modules  CAS 22 and they work fine.

DDR4-3200MT/s • 32GB Module Capacity • 8Gb Die Density • RDIMM • 2 Rank x 4 • PC4-25600 • CL=22 • Ext Timing 22-22-22 • 1.2V • ECC

MTA36ASF4G72PZ-3G2R

These are not cheap but they work fine.
