Surprisingly loud fans under load for Precision 7820 workstation

Hi,

I recently upgraded my 7820 workstation from:

* [dual Xeon 4116 and GTX 1060 (6Gb)] to

* [dual Xeon 6244 and RTX 4070 Super]

when playing some games such as Portal with RTX, the workstation (usually very quiet) becomes extremely loud with all fans at max speed. CPUs do seem to get hot and reach thermal throttle at times (from 45-50C idle to 80-85C under load, max around 95-100C {all measures are 'CPU temperatures' from HWinfo})

I repasted both CPUs when I upgraded using Arctic MX-4

is the noise level what I should expect given the load on the system?

If nothing looks off, are there ways for me to reduce the temperature in the chassis (replacing stock fans with more potent third party ones, ...) ?

Thanks for your help

Have you considered liquid cooling the CPU?

Yah, you went from two 85w CPU's' to two 150w.  GPU, now 220w, may be throwing some heat at the CPU's.

Some people use Noctua fans with adapters.  May get onscreen fan error at startup.

@bradthetechnut thx for coming back to me!

1) I didn't think liquid cooling was an option for T7820 workstations - not without heavy modification of the chassis  at least. What are the best options you'd recommend I look into?

2) I did see YT videos replacing the entire dell stock heatsinks with Noctua heatsinks but they seemed a bit big to accommodate the crammed dual CPU setup of the 7820. Did you mean only replacing fans in the case & the stock heatsinks? Would you have model numbers I could look into?

Thx!

Case fans are typically 80mm.

While I can answer general questions about the 7820, I don't have one myself to answer more specific questions.  I'm going to refer to a Precision expert, @Chino de Oro , if he would be so kind as to finishing answering.

Got notification from Brad as soon as I got back from a holiday leave.  For OP inquiry, I do not know of any liquid cooling options available for dual processors setup in T7820.  The loud fan noise should be gradually decreased once the temps are brought within thermal design settings.  But, it's still very loud due to the design of small heatsink fans.  The two rear fans can be upgrade to Noctua static fans.  For the GPU, it's separated from the processors heat by a metal separator and therefore, was not affected by the processors thermal.

Brad was right on point regarding the noticeable fan noise level was due to increased TDP from dual Xeon gold processors upgrade.

@Chino de Oro

Hello,

I would also like to buy T7820 with dual gold CPU's but my concern is the noise on the full load. So please elaborate as much you can on this topic because Dell or other guys have provided 0 information on this. As I was able to see, this model is the only one in the series with such CPU way of stacking: one over the other, so I won't be able to replace coolers with noctua ones as I did on T7600 and T7610 (where noise was reduced almost to zero).

As I saw from very few images or videos (no more than two on the entire internet), it seems the CPUs are encased in a plastic case in middle with some space front and rear between radiator and some fans that are placed in a metal case. So, as I understand from your replu, the rear vents can be changed with noctua vents. Good. But it's not enough to kill the noise. The rest? Can we extract front ones from the cage and replace them with noctua  also (using of course adapters to connect to motherboard?). I will really appreciate elaborating on this

I'm running almost the same configuration, went from dual 6132's to dual 6244's in my 7820, and from a GTX1080 to a Proart 4070ti,

CPU's at idle sit mid 50's, and under load mid 70's, (with a max of mid 80's to low 90's)

The (stock) fans are barely audible most of the time, they will do a vacuum cleaner impression when starting a game or a render, but this never lasts more than about ten seconds and it quiets down quickly (it always did this, also with the previous CPU's and GPU)

One thing that comes to mind is BIOS version, check if that by any chance is not 1.8.2 this one was known to cause really loud fans (my BIOS is up to date with the current version)

Hope this helps.
