SupportAssist Recovery Tool 5.5.13.0 crashes computer roughly every hour

Hello Community,

A customer of ours uses a fleet of identical Precision 3660 systems. About two months ago, all the systems suddenly started crashing after roughly an hour of use. While investigating the issue, we discovered that our automated patch rollout for Dell Command Update had installed version 5.5.13.0 of the SupportAssist Recovery Tool on the day the crashes began. We then uninstalled the program, and the crashes stopped.

The issue now is that our automated patching, understandably, reinstalled the program because DCU identified it as a missing component—a critical one, no less. As a result, we were forced to deactivate automated patching for these machines temporarily. Unfortunately, this means I now have to manually check multiple machines for updates every few weeks, which is both inconvenient for me and costly for our customer (we all have to make a living, after all).

We attempted to contact Dell Support about this issue, but their assistance was less than helpful. All they did was direct us to the "Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plug-in for Dell Update," likely because it was the only item with "SupportAssist" in its name available on the drivers page for this type of machine. Despite multiple attempts to clarify the issue, they simply repeated their advice, and eventually, we stopped responding.

Today, I checked again to see if there was an update for the SupportAssist Recovery Tool, but unfortunately, there was none.

So, I’m reaching out to the community: Is this a known issue, and are there any permanent fixes aside from uninstalling the program?

Kind regards,

PKU
