Samsung SSD 980 Pro in adapter PCIe card: Dell precision 7920 tower not booting

Hi all,

I am placing a Samsung SSD 980 Pro 500GB, which is PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2., inside an adapter card like this one

https://www.dell.com/de-de/shop/dell-pcie-ssd-gen4-volle-h%C3%B6he-karte-holds-bis-zu-2x-m2-solid-state-laufwerk/apd/400-bole/massenspeicher-laufwerke-und-speichermedien#support_section

and my Dell Precision 7920 tower does not boot afterwards and is stuck at the Dell logo.

If I place a Samsung SSD 980 1TB (ie. non "Pro") which is not PCIe 4.0, in the same adapter card on the same slot inside the adapter and inside the tower, everything works just fine.

BIOS is up to date as of today.

Does anyone know any incompatibility with the Samsung SSD 980 Pro from the Dell Precision? or is it the adapter card that is at fault?

Thank you

If the adapter would work with the 980 non-Pro, then it is not a faulty adapter.

Have you try the 980 Pro w/adapter on a different PCIe slot?  NVMe Flexbay?  The test means to rule out if 980 Pro is a faulty SSD.

Hi @Chino de Oro

Thanks for the answer.

I tried the 980 Pro with an NVMe station like this one

https://www.amazon.fr/daccueil-NVME-Adaptateur-SATA-duplicateur/dp/B0BG3YX5QH

and it seemed to work just fine.

I tried the 980 Pro+adapter on other PCIe slots (#6, #7, #1) and I had the same issue than the one I am describing.

I don't have M2 Flexbay.
