Precision 3660 - Graphics Card Upgrade - 500W model - and warranty?
Hello all,
I am currently using a dell precision 3660 tower with the following specifications:
i7-12700K
16GB DDR5
RTX A2000 12GB
500W PSU
My main question is as follows: Would an RTX 4070 12GB work with this configuration? Looking at the technical guidebook, it shows the 3070 is a supported card . Though it does not show whether or not this is supported with a K-sku or not. As the power draw for those processors would be higher.
On paper, this should work from what I can tell. As the 3070 has a 220W tdp, this should theoretically mean that a 4070 with a 200W tdp would work fine. Though I am a little uncertain. Therefore, I am asking.
Aside of that, would this in any way shape or form void warranty? I am located in the European Union.
Thank you in advance,
-Mick

The Precision 3660 is shipped with 300w, 500w, 750w, and 1000w power supply depending on the graphics needs. You can try to fit an RTX 4070 into your system but the power supply would not handle peak power requirements.
About the warranty, it's having a catch. It won't void the warranty when you installed third party components. But if the system is damaged and Dell determines the contributing cause to third party components, it voided the warranty, especially if it happens during the upgrade process. It also depends on countries, regions, some Dell folks are pretty open and assist without problem when you have pro support.

If your 500w PSU isn't having any trouble with a 220w GPU, it certainly won't have any trouble with a 200w GPU.
Remember, that leaves 300w for the PC and all of its components. So if you were to think it needs more than that, then upgrades are available as you already know.
Another way to look at is the i7-12700k has a base TDP of 125w and turbo TDP of 190w. Going along with what Chino said, it still may not hurt to use a higher wattage PSU, which would be Dell's 750w since the 3660 does not take an ATX PSU. 750w would be a little future proof leaving room for upgrades later.

So, If I were to play it safe, a 750W unit would have to be acquired. From my knowledge dell does not have an option to get said power supply unit though. So it would have to come from a third party re-seller.
Though it does seem plausible that a 4070 would in this case work fine with a 500W psu. Another option I have consider would be an RTX A4000 (ampere or ada, not sure yet.) As that would most definitely work. Or, a 4060Ti.
But leaving ~300W after the cpu does make it seem like it would be enough. I have actually found that zotac has a mini-pc that also uses a 4070 with an i7-13700. Therefore I do feel like this should work just fine. Thanks.

Dell has withdrawn the last 2 BIOS Releases with NVIDIA 4000 GPU Support (2.7.x and 2.8.1).
They won´t tell us, any reason.#
There are rumors and videos, that the 4090 will melt down the PSU connector.
Premier Support has no knowledge about the BIOS...

as for the 4090, probably related to the 12vhpwr connector nvidia uses for it. As that connector is known to cause issues. I also suspect the 40 series cards would still work. Though the bios update would most likely just hold some kind of enterprise level optimization for *maybe* more stability.
