Precision 3650 Radeon driver crash

Hi,

Recently received 37 Precision 3650 systems with 32GB(2x16GB) RAM and Radeon Pro WX 3200 GPUs, running latest release Win10 x64. BIOS changed to disable multi-monitor, make Radeon primary display adapter, also disabled Hyper-Threading (no massively parallel CPU loads expected, would prefer to boost single-core performance).

Power settings in Windows set to never sleep, but to turn off the monitor after 15 mins. AMD Radeon Enterprise 21Q4 driver loaded (latest AutoCAD certified driver, since we are running AutoCAD 2023).

Latest BIOS (1.12) is installed. Using exact same image for all machines.

26 systems in, I've got FOUR that, after an extended period of time, the monitor would not wake from sleep. Remote Desktop over the network worked, and a look in Event Viewer showed the AMD driver crashed but recovered during the time the monitor was off and the system was idle. A restart brings back the local display, at least until it happens again.

Replacing the driver with the stock Dell driver did not help. Changing PCIe Gen from Auto to Gen3 in BIOS did not help. Dell GPU and RAM diagnostics return OK.

What worked, was changing the RAM configuration in the system from dual channel to single channel by moving one of the sticks over next to the other. This is wierd because the other 22 are running without a hiccup in with the RAM in dual channel.

Researching online leads to suggestions to underclock the RAM or look at XMP profiles, none of which are available in the Dell BIOS for this machine.

I'm throwing this out there for anyone who runs across this problem, and for any thoughts you may have as to my issue. I've got 11 more machines to set up and test so I will see how those fare.

I am able to confirm that the solution to the display driver crash event is the following:

1. Move the RAM to a single channel configuration,

2. Set group policy to stop Windows from updating drivers from Windows Update (https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-automatic-driver-updates-windows-10)

3. Run the AMD driver cleanup tool, when it asks let it boot into safe mode to do a full cleanup (https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-601)

4. Reinstall the driver of your choice

Hello,

what about swapping the ram from an unit without this issue , with one having this issue ? (just to rule out some ram glitch)

Sometimes the update file is too new, and the windows and the drivers of the motherboard or graphics card may not be synchronized and cooperate, which may cause one party to crash.

I ran into another system with this issue, and simply swapped the RAM with a known working system. It did not make a difference, even with the RAM from the working system, the driver still crashed, even after I ran the AMD cleanup tool and reinstalled the driver.

It seems the combo of moving to single-channel and doing the driver cleanout/reinstall after is the ticket so far.
