Power
Is the current recommendation to leave the PC powered up, or to turn it off at the end of the day, please?

Looks like the best advice is to shut down at the end of the day, Windows does like to reboot every so often.
There is the issue about switching off mains power as well as clicking on "Shut Down" at the menu. The PC does not switch on when power is restored, it needs the front panel switch to also be pressed, so there is the suggestion not to turn mains off but to leave the PC always connected to the power. If so, mains power should be delivered via a surge protector or similar to safeguard unattended connection.
All good.

This is a question that has many pro and con on both sides. I personally shut mine down at the end of the day but from the moment I turn it on it stays on until the end of the day. This web page has a good explanation for both sides. The system does go to sleep when I am away from it at many times during the day anyway. And with the computers I have owned, and they are numerous, I have never had a problem because of shutting down at the end of the day.
Two suggestions here. Keep up to date backups and use a UPS. Both are great insurance policies if you want to avoid lost files and have some peace of mind.

For me personally, the practice will depend on the environment.
Computers at work, office, company will leave power on for IT managements control and update. Most offices are also powered down weekly.
Computers for personal, home settings will be better to power down at the end of day or after usages as they are built with lower grade components. Except for home lab, home server and personal choice of enterprise grade products.
* A new practice is changing how computers, laptops are powered as people are working from home with companies issued machines and certain rules are established for remote access and securities.
