Need advice on installing NVIDIA RTX 4080 on precision 5820 tower
Hi everyone!
I am planning to use my old precision 5820 tower to be used to train machine learning models and use it to inference them.so for that i plan to install NVIDIA RTX 4080 consumer card to that. Will that be compatible with my precision 5820? if i am planning to do this upgrade, what are the things that i need to take into consideration?
Thanks in advance!

These cards will work, but only if they physically fit in the case (Including the power connectors which for consumer cards usually go on top of the card while for workstations they go on the back of the card.)
By far the most important measurement you need to check is the height of the card. If it is higher than the height of a PCI-e slot it may not fit
RTX 4070 FE will fit, RTX 4080 FE may not fit because of the height. Check measurements. Different OEMS have different card sizes.

In addition to GPU size your power supply could be a limiting factor as 5820 spec sheet says the 5820 comes with one of two options:
"Power Supply: 425W* or 950W. "
The 425W PSU probably not adequate as Nvidia spec says:
"The 4080 16GB TGP is 320 W with a minimum recommended power supply of 750W."
There's no issue with Nvidia cards themselves. I have had at various times a Quadro, a 1650 Super, a 3070 and now 5070 in the same workstation. Just a matter of finding a smaller one and putting in a bigger PSU if needed. In the case of the 5820 PSU I think it is bespoke Dell and not off the shelf ATX.
