Linux reports over-current condition on usb ports I cannot find.

Hello!

I have recently acquired a Dell Precision T5610 workstation, used, though I hope it will fit my the purpose I intend to use it for. I have good experience with Dell products, however, I have some issues with this one.

I want to use Linux (arch or gentoo) with it. However, whichever distro I boot (live cd or install media) I get the following messages at boot time:

usb 2-1-port7: over-current condition

usb 2-1-port8: over-current condition

The message is received once, only at boot time. Also, if I look at 'lsusb -v', it shows, that the over-current condition is present, and they are not powered:

Port 7: 0000.0001 oc

Port 8: 0000.0001 oc

After some search on the good old internet, I did get a bit concerned. I do not want to use the USB ports of the computer (it will be stashed away in a computer room), however, I want to forego any problem in this matter, so that no issues can arise while in use.

Up  to now, I have checked the following:

- Windows does not report or log anything about this issue

- I physically checked all USB ports for deformed connections or shorts.

- All external USB ports seem to work, I have tested it with a thumb drive

- I could not find the actual physical ports, that are reported.

- I ran DELL diagnostics in the bios, it did not report any errors.

- I have updated the bios to the latest, with no change.

- I also ran memtest and stress test with mprime, with no errors up to now.

There are some reports, that suggest, that most of the time one can ignore the message, as the ports in question are powered down, so no damage can result from this issue. I want to ask the opinion of the community, however. What extra steps should I take to have this message removed, and when can I safely ignore it?

Thank you very much for your replies.

Disabling all USB ports got rid of the message. I do not need USB ports; am not sure, however, if the machine can be used safely this way, as it would be running 24/7.
