Headphone jack will not work if external audio jack is plugged in. XPS 8960

On any other computer I can use the headphone jack when I don't want to disturb others, and unplug the headphones and use the external speakers at other times. On my XPS 8960 tower the headphones only work if I unplug the external speakers from the back panel and plug the headphones into that port. Using Win 11 (Version 10.0.26200.5710) Is this a known issue, or one with a simple fix?

Thanks in advance for any help.

OK, headphones will only work if they are plugged in when the PC starts up. IF you pull out the cord on the front of the PC, the main speakers kick in, and you cannot get the headphones to work again until you reboot the computer; the computer doesn't see the headphones plugged into the front of the PC unless they are there at startup, and then only until they are unplugged. I hope that's more clear.
