Dell T5500 X5690 vs L5640 for power efficiencey

HI,

I have to build some labs using ESXI that will run NGF instances like Fortigate and Cisco firepower . They wont be subjected to any heavy data transfer and too much processing. Just a lab envoriment. currently all my systems around 120 are using L530 cpu and 144 GB ram and 4 SSSD of 512 GB each.

I want to upgrade the processors to hex core. my goal is to minimize total power consumption.

for that i have a question what is the clock to clock power consumption of X5690 and L5640.

since L5640 is lower power cpu with lower clock. so if its staying at 40 % most of the time wil it consume same power as X5690 ?

Xeon L5640 TDP is 60w, < 1/2 of Xeon X5690 TDP of 130W.

seems a no brainer.  L5640 is a much cooler chip.

What is the maximum power consumption for intel processor?

Under a steady workload at published frequency, it is TDP. However, during turbo or certain workload types such as Intel® Advanced Vector Extensions (Intel® AVX) it can exceed the maximum TDP but only for a limited time , or

  • Until the processor hits a thermal throttle temperature, or
  • Until the processor hits a power delivery limit.
