Can I upgrade Storage on a Precision 7920 Tower

Our lab has a Precision 7920 Tower (from 2022) with (what I think) the relevant specs:

  • Dual Intel Xeon Silver
  • Intel NVMe PCIe SSD (Front PCI e FlexBay)
  • Intel Integrated controller (R ST-e) for 1-2 Front FlexBay NV Me Drives
  • Cable assembly 1-2 HDD Front FlexBay NV Me Drives
  • 1 @ Dell M.2 carrier
  • 1 @ M.2 1 TM PCIe Class 40 Solid State Drive

We'd like to add more storage. I've, naively, tried to add some SATA SSDs into the empty bays in the FlexBay, but the machine does not seem to recognize them. Doing a bit of searching I'm thinking that our only option might be to add a second M.2 drive, but I don't see a way to physically install such a second drive (ie no second M.2 carrier).

What are our options to update the storage on this computer?

Thanks!

Thanks @PapaPee guess I was hoping that I could just pop a second M.2 drive in.

Weirdly when I look at our original order the computer came with an 8TB SATA drive, which doesn't seem to be installed in the computer. This makes me think that Dell let us buy a disk that the computer could not actually use. Guess I'll have to crack open the case to see if there are SATA cables in the 5.25" bays.

Dell seem to be a bit of a nightmare with the cabling options for the flexbays and they're not very helpful in trying to decipher the options.

As long as you have a spare x16 slot, I'd buy an Ultraspeed Quad PCIe card and add up to 4 NVMe drives using that https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/157092030267

If you really want drives in the flexbays it might be worth looking at something like this which should (I'm hesitent to say 'will') convert the flexbays to SATA/SAS

You can buy SAS/SATA caddies fairly cheaply on eBay
