3620 3.40GHz i7-7700 vs. 3620 4.20GHz i7-7700
Hi Gang
Great help last time around from Cmdr. speedstep & 1st Lt. Brad (Thank You Both)!
Sales of 3620's are changing all the time. The price fluctuations are fast and furious. Was curious (if you guys weren't too busy); maybe we could do a quick comparison between the 3.40GHz i7-7700 vs. 3620 4.20GHz i7-7700? I noticed a flood of later model 2017's 4.20GHz on ebay.
3.40GHz i7-7700
4.20GHz i7-7700
Just to be sure; none of these above have multiple (internal) sata ports correct? I think just 1 or 2? The Processor is of noticeably different construction.
Not to get confused: I recall the Cmdr. pointing out there's apparently a different compatible motherboard available which has 3 or 4 sata ports (internally)? I'm not necessarily looking for that, I was going to use a #4 port esata PCI card: Sonnet Tempo PCIE Esata 4 port TSATA6-PRO-E4 (which I picked up).
So how does the efficiency comparison look between the 4.20GHz and the 3.40GHz?
Apparently there's a bunch of 4.20GHz's available (no HHD or OS) for about the same price, (under $200).
Thanx Guys (you've been really helpful)
Mike

@WWII Researcher
All of the models have 4 Sata ports.
The system with the copper heatpipe cooler is better. The cooler alone is $50 or so.

Highpoint Rocket Raid 642L is the 4 port Model.
The Rocket series works fine with WIN8, WIN10, WIN11 because the drivers are BUILT INTO windows.

RocketRAID 600 series HBA's are an ideal 6Gb/s SATA storage solution for any PC or Mac platform, and are available with 1 to 4 Mini-SAS/SATA/eSATA ports in internal and external configurations.

SONNET Tempo looks like a cheaper alternative and its also fine.

Hi @WWII Researcher,
Have you considered external docking stations for your external drives? You indeed may already know, if a drive is used externally, it still needs power.
With a USB to SSD adapter, since SSD's are 5v, it simply gets its power from the USB slot.
With external docking station(s), which hold a range of single to multiple drives per unit, they plug into standard outlet to provide power and data is transferred via USB cable.

Hi
Would anyone at all like to make a quick comparison (or any comment at all), regarding a Dell Precision 3620 Tower 3.4 GHz i7 6700 vs. 3620 4.2 GHz i7 7700? (See photos above in the 1st post). The processors look physically totally different. In fact (unless I'm missing something), I don't see a cooling fan on the faster processor? Are those 'Cooling Fins' rather than an actual fan? Just wanted to make sure (confirm) the 4.20 GHz i7 7700 was faster and more efficient without any hidden drawbacks?
Thanks Again!
Mike

Hello,
from this
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/series/95544/7th-generation-intel-core-i7-processors.html
I can infer that the latter is an i7 7700K , base frequency 4.2Ghz and turbo 4.5Ghz , while the former would be the 7700 with base 3.6Ghz (I don't see a 3.4 variant listed ) and turbo at 4.2Ghz.
Definitely the K is the better of the 2, as performance , but has a tdp of 91Watts compared to the 65W of the 7700 , so the K should run a bit hotter but I'm reading on tomshw that the passive cooler in the 3620 with the 7700K shown in your picture is way, way better than the fan cooler in the other 3620 ( and likely that one uses a 6700 i7 )

Hi mazzinia
Nice to see you ... Thanks so much for replying!
So then to summarize:
You agree that the 7700K 4.2 GHz is obviously faster than the 6700 3.4GHz. But at first glance (according to the data), the 7700K 'could' possibly run hotter than the slower 6700 3.4GHz. But then from comments on Tom's HDWR Forum you also read that the 7700K 4.2 GHz (classified as a Passive type Cooler), actually runs Cooler than the 6700 3.4GHz? Is that correct?
I've also read on Tom's HDWR Forum that one fellow actually advised installing an additional cooling fan in the FRONT of the 3620 case.
Thank you mazzinia

Correct indeed. and they mentioned that the internal ventilation is slightly better in the newer unit with the 7700 ( I think to remember ) due to prob a more powerful fan in the back

Thank you Cmdr. speedstep
Thank you mazzinia
One thing commander: Yes I recognized those sata ports. However they're 'internal' so I'd have to find a way to bring the connections outside the case to the external drives. On the Optiplex there was a limitation to 'one' sata drive only. Will I be able to read several esata drives at the same time?
Thanx again to all!
Peace ...

You would just need one of these
https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Micro-HDMI-DVI-D-Cable/dp/B000NPKGH4/ref=sr_1_6?__mk_it_IT=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&crid=3CE3ZI02VRL5L&keywords=esata+to+sata&qid=1652344086&sprefix=esata+to+sata%2Caps%2C91&sr=8-6
or anyway something similar, to provide external connectors.

Disregard the ESATA brackets etc.
Sandy Bridge chipset has sata flaw.
Recommend ESATA card instead.

NEVER USE port 2 and 3 because of sandy bridge flaw.
Highpoint Rocket 622 Esata Card instead.

Thank you again Mazzinia
However I was looking for #4 port capability, Of course one of those would be for the system drive, but I could definitely use the other 3 ports for externals.
The other possible option might be a PCI card?

Thank You!

You will find 4 ports adapters , too, similar to the one linked . They make 1 , 2 and 4 ports as variants. The 4 ports tends to have removable internal cables, I think, too

Hello again Mazzinia
"You will find 4 port adapters"
Are we still talking about PCI cards? Some confusion here because speepstep cautioned the brackets (with cables) will not work due to faulty 'Sandy Bridge Chipset'
See the comment from Comdr. Speedstep
"Disregard the ESATA brackets etc. - Sandy Bridge chipset has sata flaw - Recommend ESATA card instead".
That's why I mentioned:

REVISION: It doesn't appear the High Point 2314 #4 Port is compatible with Windows 10
Thank You For Everything!
