TL2000 with 2x LTO6 FC Tape Drives

Hi,

I plan to get a TL2000 with 2x LTO6 FC Tape Drives.

As I understand each tape drive has a corresponding Fibre Channel Port.

Questions

1. Did I get this right ? Each tape drive has Fibre Channel Port ? If I want to use both Tape Drives I need to connect both FC Ports (LC-Connectors) to my SAN switch and zone my Backup Server to see both tape drives?

2. Is it possible to split the TL2000 between two devices?

For Example

Tape Drive A to my backup exec 2012 server.

Tape Drive B to my NAS Server (For NDMP backups)

Thanks,

Paul

Hello ZianPaul,

Yes you are correct.  When you split the library you will have each drive that you can connect to a different server & it will run your backups.  The only thing that will be shared is the robot in the TL2000 so it is best that if you are going to have 2 backups starting at the same time that you delay one by about 5 – 15 minutes so that it can get the media loaded into the first drive for backups.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello ZianPaul,

Yes each tape drive has it’s own FC port on the drive that you will direct connect to either a server or a FC switch. Also since you will have 2 drives yes you will need a FC cable for each drive & connect it to your FC switch.

Yes you can split the TL2000 into 2 logical libraries. When you split the unit you will have a 1 drive for the right side 12 slot magazines and drive 2 for the left side 12 slot magazines. Here is the link to the users guide and if you look on page 136 or 5-44 it explains about logical libraries. ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_powervault/powervault-tl2000_User%27s%20Guide_en-us.pdf

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi,

Thanks...

I went over the Guide.

Correct me if I am wrong.

For the TL2000 I can configure two logical libraries. Each will operate independently from each other.

I can connect Logical Library A to my EMC data mover 1 and Logical Library B to data mover 2 ?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Sam,

Is it advisable to connect a TL2000 directly to a server HBA card or via a FC switch?
