SCv2020 space expansion

I have an old Dell storage with 480G hard drives. What if I repalce the old ones with larger disk, not at the same time? Say I only replace 2*960G at a time. And when I repalce all the old ones, will the total space be expanded or I still get the space with 480G drives? In addition, the old ones are SAS drives, can I replace the old ones with SATA? Thanks in advance.

  1. Dell will not sell you any kind of expansions(disks, jbods, ...) for the SCv20x0 anymore because its EOS, EOL quite some time. We ask for 10K Disks some weeks ago and they sorry.  SC50x0 and SCv30x0 and other can buy parts until 8/2024
  2. Only certified Dell SCv/SC drives with propper FW and format will work within your Dell SC Compellent
  3. There is no SATA SSD and see #2
  4. Its no a problem to place larger disk in a Tier. The space will consume automaticly if a stripe set (depand on your redundancy level and number of disks) can fit into it.  Dell customers get larger drives as spares on regulary basis because small disks are not available any more or because of shortage
  5. If slots available you can insert 6-7 other disks like 10K SAS or 7.2K NLSAS as TIER3 and use it as seperate storage. Because lack of AutoTiering in the SCv20x0 the data will not split over your different TIERs

Hello,

you can expand the volume once you have already replaced both disk. All done from Dell Storage Manager.

This documentation may helps you Understanding RAID with Dell EMC SC Series Storage

Thanks
