Relocation\Removal of the Designated Cleaning Slot on TL4000

Hi,

If possible I'd like to relocate or remove the DCS on my TL4000.

The story is that our back up software views the Vault as having 48 drives numbered 1 - 48, whereas the Vault views 48 drives as 1 - 47, not assigning a number to the DCS. If possible I'd like to relocate the DCS to slot 48, if not possible I'd like to remove the DCS and reserve slot 48 as a cleaning slot for auto clean perhaps?

According to the manual this should be possible but I'm not seeing the options, I don't know when the manual was produced.

Currently Installed Library Firmware 7.43

Hello Eds IT,

From the OCP (operator control Panel; Front Panel of the library) Drill down to OCP->Configure->Library Settings->General->Remove DCS->Yes->Save.  Please verify if the Remove DCS option disappears from the OCP panel.  That should make it so that you can select any slot as the cleaning slot.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Eds IT,

If you log into the web utility, you can change the cleaning slot.  You will need to go to the Service Library Menu & then chose clean drive.  In the Clean drive menu, you can change the slot# & that will change your Dedicated cleaning slot.

If you want to remove the cleaning slot then you will need to go to the Configure Library menu.  Once in that tab you will select general tab.  You can uncheck the box for Auto Clean, & change your active slots to 48.

Also, it would be good to update your firmware on your TL as it is old. Here is the link to the firmware just in case you need it. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=6HRGD

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the reply, however I'm not sure we can do this, please see the below screenshots to understand why we're a bit lost!

We've updated the firmware

Hello Eds IT,

Are you using the I/O station on your TL4000?  Also, when you go to the general tab under Configure library menu what is your active slot count?  You should have 44 active slots if you are using I/o station.  If you are not using the I/O station, then you will need 47 active slots.  Once that has been set and saved then you should see slot 47 showing as reserved.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam,

The option is greyed out.

I still don't understand how we're meant to relocate the slot

Hello Eds IT,

From your picture that you listed your active slot count is 47.  However, you don’t have auto cleaned enabled.  So what I would do is to remove your clean media from your TL4000.  Once that is done, then I would try to enable auto clean by checking the box. Once you have auto cleaned enabled then you can import your cleaning media to the reserved slot.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

This doesn't appear to have helped, we can set the slot as 47 under clear drive but the DCS is still there?

Also we're now seeing this

Hello Eds IT,

If you remove the cleaning media from your TL4000, & do an inventory what does the slots state for slot 47?  Also, is there a dedicated cleaning slot that is showing other than slot 47?

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi

not sure if this will help or you have seen this but in the manual page 4-41 is mentions the DCS slot, might be worth a read if you haven't.

The Manual references options that we don't have, I assume the manual is quite out of date

the same page is there on the latest version december 2017 page 74. you probably seen it anyway.

i have seen on old ibm units they used to come with a slot that had a fake tape in one slot which meant you had 47 slots free.
