Powervault md3200i access to disk storage manager(enterprise manager) via VMWare virtual machine

Hi,

I've an issue with access to disk storage manager(enterprise manager) for md3200i.

I've configured storage for use with VMWare ESXi 5.5.0. I can see it in Storage Adapters and can access the storage itself and use for VM creation. Also initially storage was connected to physical server and from it I was able to connect to disk storage manager and configure it, add storage arrays etc. Recently this physical server was virtualized and shutted down. Now I can no longer access disk storage manager. Cable that was connected to old physical server now connected to VMWare ESXi server. What configuration should be done to be able to access to disk storage manager via VM or maybe there is another option for access it?

Thank you very much for any suggestions.

Can you ping both CMs from the VM? If yes than it should work... if not.... it never will work.

Your VM needs and interface within the same subnet as the MD or routing/fw is which routes the packets.

There is noting special in such a setup.

The MD can be managed trough In Band or Out of Band. Within a virtual world you need to use Out of Band which means you specify the dedicated controller management IPs within the Dell MD Storage Manager when creating the connection.

We use the countless MDs over the years for ESXi Clusters.  Running MDSM in a VM on top of the MD is OK as long as every thing is OK but you should have a MDSM installation (services not running) on a different system around in a case of a problem. For us this was the phys. which runs Windows and store all VM backups.

Hi Joerg,

thank you for response.

I've just unplug cable from old physical server and plug into VMWare Server.

But unfortunately I can't create a connection to my storage via Storage Manager. It couldn't be discovered from VM, I've also tried to add storage manually using Out of Band and typing previous internal IP for connection, but it didn't work.

Am I missing configuration step? Or maybe there should be additional adjustment on VMWare side?

Do you have any advice ?

Thank you
