PERC H840 in R540 No PCIE Riser

Hello everyone.  I have a PowerEdge R540 that I would like to purchase an H840 for.  It does not have any PCI expansion cards, just the three onboard ones in the corner (see attached picture).  I have a NIC installed in the slot circled in red, and I would like to install the H840 in the slot in blue.  I'm pretty sure it will work, but I haven't been able to find any info definitively labeling each slot and what type it is in the server.  Can someone confirm if the H840 can be installed in the slot in blue?  FYI this picture is one I found online, but it is of an R540 motherboard.

Hello thanks for choosing Dell.

You can but you will need a riser with it. Hope this helps and wish you a good one.

Do you know the part number for the riser?

Would this still allow use of the PCI slot circled in red that has the NIC I mentioned installed in it?  Based on what I've been reading it go in the "Butterfly Riser Slot" shown below?  (Number 2)

Taglerocktech,

The part number for the Perc riser looks to be part number 0VG0Y.

Let me know if this helps.

I don't see that there should be an issue, seeing that the perc riser is on the left and not the center.

I was looking at some instructions online for installing the risers for the R540 to confirm their positions and it looks like the 0VG0Y gets installed in PCI card slot 4, which runs off of CPU2 (I don't have a second CPU in this server) according to the technical guide for the R540 (https://www.mrmemory.co.uk/downloads/memory-configurations/198047.pdf).  The picture below I found on Dell's website is what makes me think it gets installed in PCI card slot 4 (the one circled in blue in the original picture I posted).   This picture was found in the installation and service manual for R540 on Dell's website, at this link: https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/poweredge-r540/per540_ism_pub/installing-an-expansion-card-riser?guid=guid-a93c44c0-2569-4b6b-8e24-d237803a3a45&lang=en-us

I was looking for a PERC riser for an external storage controller but I couldn't find one, could you point that out maybe in the picture, or if you have a technical guide that I could refer to?  I know the internal PERC riser is towards the middle of the board but thats obviously not it since it has the H740p in it.

Oh and just to be clear, I'm referring to this for the H840, to connect to an MD1420 using external SAS cables.  I've seen another one that has internal connectors but I don't think that is the one that I need. part number is 012W3T, I put a picture of it below.  Let me know if I should be looking at a different controller for the MD1420

Do you think that this part number might work better 330-BBJO?   Its a butterfly riser that seems to use riser slot 1 (CPU 1), as indicated by the picture below, its labeled as riser slot 1 (cpu 1) in the technical guide I referenced earlier.

If this would work, my question would be, is the back of my R540 compatible?  I noticed a piece of the back of the server is removed in that illustration.  I've put a picture of the back of my R540 below.  Excuse the mess!  We've got a cleanup scheduled when we do this install!  The R540 is circled in red for clarity.

I apologize, I was mistaken on my previous posting, as the H840 isn't installed on the Perc riser, which is intended for the internal storage controller on the server, not the external controller for the PV. So the riser you listed is supported, but I can't be certain based on the photo if it would work,

Do you know if this back section is normally removable that I have circled?

Hello please note removing that part would cause NO POST or other booting issues.

Taglerocktech,

I don't think they were referring to the correct part. You should be able to as long as there are no gaps or openings that are left in the case, which could affect the cooling ability of the server.

Let me know if this helps.

Removing that piece of metal on the back?  Do you know why?  I didn't see any sensors or anything, and it seems if its removed and the butterfly riser is put in its place it would work right?  Or am I mistaken about that?

Just wanted to update everyone that I installed the butterfly riser and the perc h840 and it works.  i only wish it would have fit on the left side (the side with the plastic piece), cause it seems like the cooling isn't that great on the other side.  There is a small hole in the fan shroud though towards the front, so hopefully that will move enough air over the heat sync.
