ML3 tape fc direct connection to Esxi Host compatability

Hello Folks ,

I have a customer which already has Veeam server on a virtual machine based on VMware Host R740.

He wants to get ML3 FC tape and connect it direct to the VMware host by adding an HBA card to the server and after that mapping the tape to the Veeam virtual machine. 

IMHO it works but not supported by VMware.

Is there any other opinion or guidance which can help?
